Airport with least delays week before Christmas

I plan to be in NYC from around Dec 16 -21 this year. Polar vortexs aside, which NYC airport has the least delays at this time of year?

Aren't they all very busy? Newark has been named as one of the country's busiest airport's period.

They all have delays. If one has delays they all will. Delays are usually weather based, and the weather is the same at all of them. (Once a few planes are delayed because of weather, the airport remains backed up all day because there's no slack between planes.)

How would anyone know what airport would be busier than another at any time of year?

You just have to take your chances and go with the flow.

As mentioned, Newark is one of the busiest all the time!

Is there some reason you cannot be delayed?

Then just roll the dice and hope for the best.

If 1 is delayed...they will probably all be delayed.

Take the flight to whichever airport gets you the best price.

NYC isn't like Boston. Up here, you can go to Manchester NH or Providence, which are tiny compared to Boston Logan. Not so in NYC. All the NYC airports are major, busy large airports.

... I agree just go with the flow..,.

flightstats.com

is a website that shows ontime arrivals by airline and by flight. Last I looked you could even select time of year. Have a look there with the info on your flight options.

Newark Airport tends to be the worst because of the runway configuration - they do not have very much operational flexibility. Large aircraft can land only one of two directions. The other two airports have more flexibility. LaGuardia is set up in such a way that what used to be the "short runway" is now the same length as the "long runway" So, they have double the number of options. They still can't land two planes simultaneously at LaGuardia but at least they have more flexibility to adjust to weather patterns.

JFK has the most flexibility with four runways. In optimal weather, JFK is the most efficient airport. Due to the size of the airport and its position along the water, it is sometimes easier to close JFK completely during snowstorms whereas somehow Newark is better able to keep the runways open.

Bottom line, if the weather is bad, there will be delays everywhere and if the weather is good, there shouldn't be much in the way of delays.

If you're traveling on an international flight or transcontinental you'll have to arrive at either Newark or JFK. LaGuardia is basically for shorter-haul domestic flights (and a few from Canada.)
