Restaurants Near the Public Theatre

Hi,

I'm looking for really good restaurants within walking distance of the Public Theatre in New York City (425 Lafayette Street). Any recommendations? Is that area safe to walk around later in the evening?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hecho en Dumbo on Bowery between 4th and Great Jones for good Mexican. Great Jones Cafe on Great Jones and Bowery for Cajun. Veselka on 2nd Ave and 9th Street for Ukrainian and American comfort food. Ippudo on 4th Ave between 9th and 10th Streets for ramen. That's only what I know. That area is a food paradise. Plus McSorley's bar is right around the corner on E. 7th. And yes, you will be safe. The E. Village is one of the busiest nightlife districts in America. You will not be unsafe at all.

The area is fantastic at night -- you are in for a treat! I'd even encourage you to walk around the area, it's very lively (I go to The Public several times a year) There is an absolutely outstanding Vietnamese place across the street from The Public, Indochine http://www.indochinenyc.com/index_F.html and I would make a reservation

Also, The Public itself has a restaurant, The Library http://www.publictheater.org/Visit/Library/

Note that many of these restaurants are fully booked, especially on weekends. There are many, many more modest places that you can stroll into, but their reputations are not quite as large. I suppose it's easier late at night, but certainly not "pre-theater".

Can you recommend any of these more moderate restaurants in the vicinity of The Public? Italian, maybe?

judy, welcome to the forums :-) This thread is a year old. The suggestions would still apply, and many of them are moderately priced so it's unclear what you want.

I see a prior comment questioned whether Ziggy's suggestions would all be "fully booked". Many don't even take bookings. Just allow ample time and enjoy. I think the point is that it's a neighborhood loaded with restaurants, so if you don't like the waits at some of them, find another that looks appealing.

If you have a particular budget or preference in mind, start a new thread using the "ask a question" button and post your specific question.

Although it is a neighborhood loaded with restaurants and I love walking around it, I must confess that my wife and I have been frustrated just walking around looking for something moderately priced. There's a lot of high prices places around and a lot of too-small, upscale fast food places oriented towards trendy NYU students living off daddy's dime (oooh, did I just say that?) but when we're tired I want an address of a sit down place that's not too noisy or trendy -- or expensive. It would certainly be worth googling the places Ziggy mentioned but I'll throw in a couple of others

One nice and reasonable place is the Ukranian East Village Restaurant which is so old school they don't even have a web site. Here's a map, it's a 7 minute walk from the Public and my wife and I like it a lot

There's also Soup N Burger which I have never eaten at but looks like it might be more or less a diner

If you google reviews of this place Yelp's are middling, but menupages and tripadvisor are much better

google "famous cozy soup n burger nyc reviews"

There also are a lot of places which I've passed but not eaten at along St. Marks Place
