journey from JFK to 103, East 29th Street

I'd be very pleased to have advice on how to do this journey from the airport by public transport. Also, any idea on how much it would cost by taxi (afternoon?)

What would people recommend by way of buying metro tickets in advance?

All advice would be welcome! It's a special birthday trip for my husband's 60th and we'll be there from 12th - 17th April inc.

thanks.

Take the Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica, buy LIRR tickets and subway tickets, if desired, when you exit the Airtrain. LIRR to Penn Station, walk to your address ( about 7 blocks ). Airtrain $5, LIRR $7-12 depending on time of day. Combine Airtrain fare with subway purchase. Plenty of help at Airtrain exit to answer questions. You pay for Airtrain when you exit. Cab from Penn would be inexpensive if you chose not to walk. Got luggage? Take the cab.

the bane of public transport >>Got luggage? Take the cab.<< even the proponents of the train/subway system suggest a cab when luggage is involved - do you want to schlep your suitcase(s) almost half a mile?

Taxi + airport to hotel, door to door!

Not everyone prefers sitting in rush hour traffic to rolling a suitcase onto a train.

What time in the afternoon?

If you'd like to get closer to your hotel, then take the AirTrain to Jamaica and then the E train subway to Lexington Avenue. Change there for the downtown 6 to 28th Street (and Park Avenue South.) Your hotel is at 29th Street and Park Avenue South, so very close.

There are elevators and escalators at both ends of the AirTrain and for the change at Lexington Avenue. There won't be at 28th Street, but that's not a deep station.

You pay for the AirTrain after you get off in Jamaica, not at JFK. You go down to the subway and can buy your weekly Metrocard there. This is not something yuo can buy in advance outside NYC.

Whoops! 18.55 arrival at airport - flight was put back a couple of hours. Does this make a difference to the advice?

Actually, your arrival time means the trains will be less crowded. It also decreases the likelihood of the worst of the traffic jams, but the roads from JFK can be crowded at pretty much any hour.

Be aware that the NYC subway system is completely safe, and there will be lots of people on it when you'd be traveling. This wouldn't be regarded as late at all in NYC.
