GC Holder with Indian PP that expires soon - must travel

A friend of mine has a round trip ticket NYC to India for travel this Tuesday (4/15). He is a green card holder. His Indian Passport is going to expire on May 4th which is 5 days after he returns to the US. Will "they" let him travel? He is transiting through Doha on Qatar.

I believe passports have to be valid for six months from the time of entry to enter the US. However I'm not sure if that would be different if you have a visa.

Even US citizens now need a valid passport to enter the country unless there is an emergency situation. The best is to contact customs and border protections.

He should be able to go TO India, since he has the right to live there. But he'd better get onto the Indian consulate and find out about renewing the passport in order to come back again.

He will not likely be stopped from leaving the US but he will need to get a new passport in India in order to come back and he better check what the situation is in Qatar.

When you say "Green Card" do you really mean that he is a permanent resident of the US, but a citizen of India? That might not be a problem, since he is a resident of the US, and allowed to be here as long as he has not left for 2 years.

Maybe he ought to try to renew his passport in India, paying whatever is necessary to get it done immediately.

And if you were talking about a visa to the US rather than permanent residency, they will never let him back into the US without a long term Indian passport. How could your friend have been so foolish, I am sorry to have to say.

Highly technical question - should be addressed by the Indian Passport folks.......

Also, letting the document lapse is highly irresponsible on your 'friends' part.

So, check with the authorities and do what must be done!

This is the type of question, as Poppa writes, that is not in the province of a travel website. He needs to talk with his country´s passport agency, he needs to ask the US consulate in India if he will indeed be able to return to the USA w an almost expired passport. The airlines upon boarding are apt to turn him back because they are who will have to provide return transport if he is not let back in to the USA. He really would be best advised to get in touch quick with his country´s consulate and the US migration people. This was dumb of him.

While it has been remiss of him not to renew his passport 6 months before it expired (crazy rule - why have a validity date if you can't use the damn thing 6 months before it expires?), he did not expect to have an emergency in his family that is forcing the issue.

Truly appreciate everyone's input here. Will post the outcome after Monday and his visit to the consulate.
