No Tax on puschases?

Hello,

We're Canadians and will be visiting NYC for a couple fo days. I think I remember that above a certain amount of purchases ($100?), we don't pay taxes. At least this was the case in some apparel stores (Zara?).

Is this still the case? And does this work in liquor stores as well, such as Astor Place?

Thanks!

There is no tax on clothing items that are $110 or less. ( this includes shoes) Food bought in supermarkets etc. is NOT taxed. Food in restaurants is. Beyond that, EVERYTHING else is taxed--this includes liquor!

Unlike in Canada, however, services are rarely taxed. It's almost always a "sales tax" in the U.S., not a "goods and services tax" as is normal in Canada.

The GST (goods and services tax) in Canada is a flat 5% rate. Some provinces extend that to their provincial sales tax. Some don't. Just to make it clear. FOr example, BC had 12% on all goods and services, but that was rescinded a year or so ago, so it applies only on Goods and not on services. So when you come to NYC and buy clothing under $110, each item under that price will be free of sales tax. However a massage, haircut, etc will be charged a sales tax.

Hi

The no sales tax under $110 is that standard or for tourists? In vegas everything has tax which I forget when going to pay!

Tourists pay the same taxes US citizens do. Sales and use taxes are controlled at the state level so what's true in Las Vegas Nevada doesn't have anything to do with New York.
