Car hire - pick up at JFK or Manhatton?

We are staying in New York for a few days, then travelling on to Pennsylvania and Washington DC then flying home from JFK. We won't need a car until we leave New York and are wondering would it be easier and more cost effective to get a cab back to the airport to pick up a car rather than picking it up in Manhatton?

Thanks for your advice.

What is your first destination after NYC? It might be a good idea to get the train there and pick up a rental car later. We got the train from NYC to Washington DC and it was a really nice journey.

First destination after NYC is Lancaster, PA, we are planning to go via King of Prussia Mall so think we will need the car to do this.

This is complicated. JFK is in the wrong direction. You'll have to drive back through the city and you'll incur a hefty toll to get to NJ (this assumes you take the Verrazano Bridge, which is the least painful route). I'd advise pricing out several options: 1) Pick up and drop off at JFK, 2) Pick up in the city or EWR and drop off at JFK (or where you picked it up but then you've got to get to JFK), 3) One-way rental from a NY/EWR pick up to DC and then Amtrak back to NY (that would be the easiest).

There are lots of places to rent a car in Manhattan and they are usually cheaper than the airports because they don't have huge airport fees. You could pick up and drop off in Manhattan and then just get a cab to the airport when you get back. Most non-airport rentals do not allow you to drop off in a different location. The other downside is that they are often only open during Mon-Sat business hours. Still, there could be big savings by renting in Manhattan or even NJ.

You have to run the car rental cost comparisons yourself. Since there are Airport Cost Recovery Fees (too put it nicely ... ), it is not certain that pickup and return at the same place would be less. You have to test it out.

For me, the issue is that JFK is a horrible traffic and location spot to start off for Pennsylvania. You have to cross two rivers, and those (not to mention the Queens parkways (highways)) are the choke points. Depending on the luggage situation, the previous suggestion to train to Pennsylvania is not bad. One problem with Manhattan rentals is that (especially on summer weekends) a long-advance reservation is necessary, and you might get stuck with a different car (substitution - no extra cost involved) than you wanted. On the plus side, it's sure to have an automatic transmission!

If the PA destination is not train-friendly, even a commuter-train ride to NJ would be preferable to public trans with luggage to JFK, and then crossing two rivers. The key will be finding a rental agency convenient to a rail station. But the rental companies have a much cheaper and easier time keeping cars in stock even immediately adjacent to NYC, like (... for example) Jersey City, Hoboken, Secaucus, and Newark. And those business-dense places will have rental agencies.

Your first destination is in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Consider taking the train to Philadelphia and renting a car there. Car rentals are available from major companies right inside the main Philadelphia train station - 30th Street.

At the end of your trip compare the cost for just dropping off the car in Washington and taking the train back to New York, which will be easiest, and driving back to Philadelphia and returning the car where you picked it up.
