Times Square and surrounding restaurant question

Hi,

Husband and I will be visiting NY for the first time in late May and is staying near Times Square. We were told by friends who have already visited NYC that we should avoid eating at restaurants in Times Square since prices are a lot higher and we could get better food quality elsewhere. Is this true? If it is, then we would like to avoid eating in Times Square altogether and go to different location.

We would like to ask for some recommendations/suggestion of good casual restaurant for lunch and dinner for the below location area. We are more interested in restaurants that the locals go to have a good meal and not the tourist trap restaurants.

1. Hell Kitchen for dinner

2. Greenwich Village lunch and dinner

3. Little Italy for dinner

4. Near Brooklyn promenade for lunch

5. Wall Street

6. Tribeca for lunch and dinner

7. Rockefeller Center

Thank you

You don't have to go too far out of your way to dine near Times Square. There are many good restaurants on 9th Ave which is just 1 long block west of Times Square which ends at 8th Ave.

Frequent poster Ziggy has a great food blog

There's a whole section on Hell's Kitchen in midtown west plus lots of info on other areas. While a lot of Times Square restaurants are tourist traps or overpriced, there are some decent options. John's Pizzeria in a converted church is very popular. Joe Allen's is a theater district staple with good basic American food (I like the La Scala salad). Virgil's BBQ ia popular. Saju Bistro attached to the Mela hotel imo is good solid food at decent prices. They used to have a pre theater 3 course menu but I don't see it on their website anymore. Capital Grille in the Time Life building is just north of TS and has an excellent value pre theater dinner for $39 for 3 courses, esp. good for a steak dinner.

1) I like the Mexican called Hells Kitchen.

2) The Burger Joint has opened a location in the village

Little Owl is great but hard to get a reservation. You can try walking in and eating at the bar or go for lunch.

Perry St. has a GREAT prix fixe lunch.

3) While most of the places in Little Italy are tourist rip offs, Rubirosa is very good and Lombardi's for pizza is a NYC classic.

4) Iris Cafe

5) Go to Stone St. Adrienne's Pizza Bar is one option

6) Locanda Verde, Benares

7) For dinner, Capital Grille pre theater is not far.

For lunch, Melt Shop for grilled cheese or La Bonne Soup

Every time I had a meal near Times Sq is in Hell's Kitchen, is just one block away!!

My favorite restaurans there are Room Service (thai), Plataforma Churrascaria and 5 Napkin Burger.

If you like a place that it is in Times Sq, look at the menu outside and decide if the prices are too expensive for your taste.

If you do want to eat in Times Sqaure, John's Pizza is AMAZING and really cheap. We also found Juniors to be very cheap and good.

I am also a +1 for Ziggy's blog, eating in Hell's Kitchen and The Burger Joint.
