The title of your thread doesn't really tell us what your question is about.

New York City is very busy and very hectic the entire month of December. New Year's Eve is probably the busiest and most expensive night of the year in New York City. The lights are generally up through the first couple days of the New Year.

Air travel around Christmas / New Year's is an absolute nightmare.

You'd have fewer crowds and better values if you came in early to mid-January.

If you must come for the lights and shopping, early December may give you better flight availability.

It is going to be a very expensive time for you to fly from Australia so no matter when you come in December you will pay top dollar for flights. The question then is accommodation. This is very expensive around Thanksgiving and then becomes cheaper around the second week and third week of December and then spike again over new years and then drops out big time after the first week of January.

Also, the Christmas decorations come and go much quicker than they do in Australia. The bulk of them don't usually go up until after Thanksgiving and then come down within a few days of NYE.

For us to really help you, the best thing to do would be to start a new post, as your title is vague as suggested above, and post what your budget per night is and whether or not it includes tax, how many rooms you need and if you need anything in particular i.e. an apartment style hotel, sofa bed etc. Also list some specific dates and the hotel experts can better advise you.

Christmas decorations come down very soon after New Years Day. Coming right around Christmas week and leaving before New Years is a lower demand and more reasonable hotel prices (and, of course, Christmas decorations are still up). Hotel prices for New Years (and often days leading up to it) can be very high. Early Dec hotel prices are also very high (though not as high as NYE)

You'll want to look into hotel pricing and balance that with flight pricing.
