Tips for Central Park?

Hi, i read that Central Park is huge. This may sound silly but is there a "best" way to see Central Park? Also, I tend to get panicked if I get lost, is there a tip to knowing my bearings? We will be staying at the Metro Hotel 45W 35th so is there a good way in/out for the general direction of hotel. We will be there first 2 weeks in July. Thanks in advance.

Central Park is indeed huge, and is in many ways designed to get you lost. The paths are meandering and there is little in the way of signage. It's all part of Central Park's design to take you out of the mindset of the city where you hustle from point A to point B and instead back to the quiet of nature. That being said, the park is only a half mile wide, so you're never more than a quarter mile from an edge and you can always spot the buildings on the East or West side to navigate by. There is one little navigation trick in the park: Most of the streetlights have a 4 digit number stamped onto a small silver plate near the base of the pole. The first 2 digits are the cross street you are parallel to. For example, a lamp stamped "8626" would mean you are at 86th Street. You can pick up a map at Park visitor centers, but don't be afraid to wander.

Most places of interest to visitors tend to be in the southern half of the park below 86th St. or between the Met Museum and the Natural History Museum. The northernmost attraction would be Belvedere Castle that overlooks the filled in reservoir known as the Great Lawn.

^^ .... don't forget the lovely Conservatory Garden at the northern end. A fair stretch of the legs, but well worth the walk - even if I do say so myself.
