NYC-->New Orleans

NYC-->New Orleans

I'm planning a trip this summer from NYC to New Orleans. I am going to be living down there for quite a while so I like the idea of having my car with me- but I'm not opposed to getting used to biking and public transportation.

My question is this: Is it cheaper to drive and is it worth it? If you recommend driving, where are nice, cheap places to crash along the way (on the fastest route) ?

My map says that Kingsport to Knoxville is around half way if you want to do it in 2 days. The 81 is the quickest route per my info. As Mcctripper suggests there is a road trip forum so you may get more information there.

Hard to say for sure without knowing more about your situation.

If you're willing to drive 10-12 or so hours per day (and you can avoid any really bad traffic that might make the trip take longer), you can, as noted above, complete the trip in 2 days. Your costs would include something like 40-50 gallons of gasoline (could be more or less depending on your car), tolls, meals on the road, and a hotel room for one night. Using what I think of as reasonable assumptions, I come up with a total of around $300 or so each way.

The cost of flying varies enormously depending on when you travel. I checked Southwest Airlines from EWR to New Orleans and found that It could cost as little as $98 each way or as much as $380 depending on timing. Of course, there will be additional costs associated with flying -- getting to/from the airport, for example.

Do you know where you will be living? Will you need to own a car and will you have a place to park it?

You can fly Newark to New Orleans for less than $200 round trip, but not having a car in New Orleans may be a problem depending on where you will be living. New Orleans has buses and the street cars run in a limited area, but there are no trains to get you in and out from the the central business district.
