Dive Eats / Drinks / Happy Hour

Like the title says looking for the best cheap dive places as we enjoy simple pleasures - good food (street, bar, ethnic, fair/festival, etc), cold Bud Light, and friendly people. We are definitely not foodies or cool hipsters and have no interest in a five star, white table cloth "experience."

Right now our stops will be including Rudy's, Wharf Bar and Grill, and McSorley's. We'll also be visiting the Hell's Kitchen area and trying some of Ziggy's suggestions (Empanada Mama, Tehuitzingo, Pure Thai, and maybe Mercato). We will also have some of the obligatory stops at Katz's (splitting a pastrami sammy), Crif Dogs, Papya King, Junior's (cheesecake only) and some of the Pizzerias.

Looking for any other suggestions and a place or three up in the Bronx for pre and post the September 2nd Yankee game. Would also appreciate a few Brooklyn suggestions as that will be home base for 6 nights.

You are not far from one of the largest Chinese areas in NYC, 8th Avenue. Loads of places there to eat.

Also, 5th Avenue is a HUGE Spanish area in that area of Brooklyn(Sunset Park.) Loads of restaurants carrying all types of Spanish food(by country.)

Bars: I would take the train down to Atlantic Ave/Pacific Street. There is a great local bar on 4th Ave and Bergen Street: 4th Avenue pub. You can also walk up(after you get off at Pacific/Atlantic) to Smith Street or Court Street in Carroll Gardens/Boerum Hill for a great bar/restaurant scene.

For another dive bar suggestion in Greenwich Village, check out Off the Wagon. Fun atmosphere. Cheap beer (by the pitcher). They have different types of specials depending on the day of the week. http://www.nycbestbar.com/off/ There was a "beat the clock" special when we were there on a Saturday afternoon. Pitchers started at $5 for the earliest hours.

Dive bar in the city: Subway inn(60th/Lexington Avenue.)

No food, but you can order from Atomic Wings a few blocks down. There is also a pizzeria a few doors down that you can bring into the bar.

I completely forgot and lost track of Off the Wagon after seeing that one a few days ago. Thanks for putting it back on the radar and the permanent list!!!

Subway Inn looks "good" too !!

Any Bronx suggestions for pre and post game?

Looks like it might be the Subway Inn for the pre-game lubing as I would suspect that Stan's and the Yankee Tavern would be absolutely jammed pack. It appears to be a super short walk to the subway, grab the 4 uptown, and 5 stops later exit and proceed to Bambino's House.

The subway is across the street.

I would grab a drink there and then head to Yankee Stadium for food.

Crocodile Lounge sounds like your sort of place - free personal pizza with every drink.

The city is full of $1 oyster happy hours - and not crappy oysters - they're the same ones they sell for full price before and after happy hour. Desmond's steak house on 7th at 38th has a good selection, as does the place in Chelsea Market - Cull and Pistol.

Xian Famous Foods all over the city has great hand pulled noodles and other very unique dishes from Xian.

The Brooklyn hipsters have moved on but I still love the Latino food trucks around the ballfields in Red Hook. A bit of a walk from the train, Van Brunt or the bus stop by Ikea but worth it!

Jeremy's Ale House (near the seaport) is our favorite dive bar. They open at 8 AM and their motto is "Beer - its not just for breakfast anymore". Runner up is Dakota Roadhouse near the WTC. If a dog comes up to you and begs for your burger you just met Dakota.

Tried to get into McSorley's once on a Sunday but they decided to keep the crowd waiting outside past their posted opening time and were pretty rude about it so I wont try again. Would recommend Fraunces Tavern.
