Ideas for piano bar or dinner show for a Sat night in July?

This board has been incredibly helpful. All the trip reports and comments have made planning our trip so much easier. Thanks to all of you who contribute. We will be in NYC with some friends from abroad and have lists of lots to do but have a free Sat eve and thought a nice dinner show or piano bar might be fun. Can anyone recommend something that won't break the bank....8 days/9 nights in NYC is an expensive vacation!

Thanks

Rob

I recently was a first timer at "Marie's crisis"

In Greenwich village and it was awesome... It's a divey sing out loud super fun and friendly piano bar with a mostly gay and TALENTED clientele that sing and play showtunes all nigt long . For a $1 in the tip jar your requests will be played. We had a great time and (as straight ladies) felt welcomed and joined in all the fun! I can't wait to go back.

There aren't a lot of dinner shows. 54 Below can be great but it gets pricey. There are plenty of good jazz clubs, but the better ones like Dizzy's Coca Cola or Jazz Standard also get pricey with music fee and food. For more of a budget conscious evening, a fun dinner in a place without entertainment ...maybe ethnic food like Indian, Chinese, Thai etc.and then a piano bar like Brandy's or Marie's Crisis or the Duplex (Marie's and the Duplex are right near each other) is a better bet.

Marie's Crisis sounds like a total blast. Is there anything to eat there or is it just drinks? Thanks so much!!!!

I wouldnt eat there. There are loads of good restaurants nearby. John's Pizzeria on Bleeker st. or Keste for pizza would make for a fun evening.

I agree with whiz's suggestions and would add these two:

www.birdlandjazz.com

www.joespub.com - a very eclectic mix of music and on the cheaper side esp if you don't eat there

No food... Just drinks and basic at that..! Fantastic time!! I don't know lots of show tunes (was more for a friend) but wass able to request and sing along to the likes of grease and sound of music etc... Some voices were amazing and sometimes the better guys did solos that really gave you goose bumps!
