College Tour and how to get to JFK from Hotel

Hello All-

We will be heading to New York to tour a few university campuses. I want to make sure I utilize the best method of transportation and most cost effective.

We arrive to LGA from there I am planning on taking a taxi to the hotel Ludlow @ 180 Ludlow Street, New York, NY 10002.

On Wednesday we are heading to Fordham (Rose Hill Campus) for the 10am tour, We are planning to take the subway to Rose Hill and return for the 2pm Fordham (Lincoln Center) tour by the Fordham Shuttle.

Thursday we will take the subway to Columbia and leave Columbia at 11:30am take a taxi to the FIT for noon.

Friday heading to St. Johns in Queens again we will be on the subway.

Saturday morning we are heading back home leaving from JFK what is the most cost effective way to get to JFK from our hotel.

The subway doesn't go to Fordham Rose Hill, although it isn't that far away from Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse. Although you'll have to pay an extra fare, I'd take a Metro North train from Grand Central direct to Fordham, where the stop is right on the Rose Hill campus.

For getting from your hotel to Columbia, the closest subway stop is 2nd Avenue, but you'll need to change twice. This isn't hard, but if you want to avoid it, just walk over to Houston and Lafayette and take an uptown D to Columbus Circle. Change there for an uptown 1 to 116th Street/Columbia University. If you don't feel like walking that far just get on an uptown F at 2nd Avenue and take it one stop to Broadway-Lafayette. There you can make a same-platform transfer to the D and then proceed as above.

From Columbia to FIT you'll get there more quickly and with less stress by just taking the downtown 1 train from 116th Street/Columbia University (where the stop is right at the campus entrance on Broadway) to the 28th Street (& 7th Avenue) station. FIT is a block away.

The subway doesn't go to St. John's. There have been some threads on what combination of subway and bus is best, so try a search on this site. Others may respond as well.

If you want to take the AirTrain and subway to your hotel you'd have several options. I think I'd take the Howard Beach AirTrain to Howard Beach and then get an A train going toward Manhattan. Get off at Jay Street/Metrotech and make a same platform transfer to a Manhattan bound F train. Take that to Second Avenue/Lower East Side. Get out the back end and you'll be on Houston Street a few short blocks from your hotel.

There are several different options-

1) The Easiest is a car service (about $60+ w/tax & toll) these are the most commonly used (linked below)

tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i23339-Popular_…

Car service is 45 mins to an hour

2) Public transport means transfers and will take 1 to 2 hours-

a) Subway to the bus is the cheapest ($2.50pp with metrocard) AND WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 HRS -Take the Uptown/Queens bound "F " (subway) line at the 2nd ave station (3 blocks from 180 Ludlow) ride (for about an hour) to Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike then catch the Q 10 bus to JFK (another hour ride)

b) The more traveled public transport mode is Subway to JFK Air train (7.50 pp) WILL ABOUT TAKE AN HOUR & 15 MINS -follow instructions above to Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike -but transfer to the E train get out at Archer ave Sutphin blvd & then transfer to the airtrain (15 mins) to JFK.-

The link below is for the NYC Subway system & it should give you a better idea-

Just as a note- For you & mostly for other forum posters-

While it physically LOOKS closer to take A to Howard beach (fror a JFK Air train connection)...

...Not all A trains go to Howard beach, (as you will see on the subway map I linked above) some A trains go to Ozone Park Lefferts Blvd (and that mistake has made many people miss flights) a slew of unregistered car services sit at this station banking on the fact that people will make this mistake.

That is one reason why the Air train that connects Archer Ave/Sutphin Blvd is usually easier for travelers.

Also this Air train Connection-taking the E (& F in your case) trains- the E & F are express outside of Manhattan, but with the other Air train connection (A to Howard beach) the A train starts to go Local once outside of Manhattan

Even if you get the correct A train - it is a bit slower 15- 30mins more - it could be much longer if you end up at Lefferts Blvd. (usually about a 50/50 chance that you will get the right train first)

Bottom line I feel when posting on the forum we should all suggest E train to Sutphin blvd/ Archer Ave for a JFK airtrain connection

St Johns--take the E or F to the Union Turnpike station. Ride in the back half of the train. Walk up a back staircase ( back in relation to the direction the train you are riding on is going) and you will see signs for the Q 46 bus. There are limited and regular buses. A limited skips some stops. You CAN take a limited if that is what is there--otherwise just take whatever is there and it will take a few extra minutes. There are two different destinations on the Q46. Ignore them. You will be getting off before either. Just ask the driver for St. Johns. The bus stops at the corner.

Using the metro card it is a free transfer from the subway to the bus and then from the bus to the subway, when you return.
