Large Dollar Coins in NYC

Is there anywhere I can get large dollar coins in NYC. I have tried a couple of banks but they just have the ones with Pocahantas on them. Do they still make the large coins? Just want them as souveniers.

That's Sacagawea. The Eisenhower coin isn't easy to find in banks or shops.

Yes, they only give Saca. dollars. Large dollars (Eisenhower dollars) stopped being minted in 1978 and are now collector's items. The Susan B. Anthony dollars minted in the 1980s and '90s are smaller coins. You can't find Eisenhower dollars in regular circulation any more.

You might want a Morgan Dollar or a Peace Dollar rather than an Eisenhower...or maybe all 3?

There is a rule in economics that if there is a choice of currency, one form will eliminate the other and that is true here. The refusal of Congress to end printing of short-lived paper dollars worked against the more durable dollar coins. These could be found almost exclusively at certain vending machines such as in the post office (now gone) and ticket machines at Penn Station and on the subway. I have yet to find a bank that carries them. Americans are very resistant to change whether it is going to the metric system or using different forms of money. You can find coins worth $5 or $10 elsewhere, but not here. Currently the 1 and 5 cent coins cost more to make in metallic value than the face value, but try to get rid of them.
