Gosh. There are hundreds of great options.

One great place to start is to check out forum regular Ziggy's blog. It's especially interesting for his Hell's Kitchen Survival Guide, but all of it is mouth watering and entertaining. www.eatingwithziggy.com

Think about what types of cuisine you would like to try. For neighborhoods to explore, how much time do you anticipate having between "ready to head out to dinner" and "really should be home in bed"?

For market type eating (with restaurants in the market), Eataly is great. Chelsea Market is also fun, with a wide variety of food options. If she gets finished before dark, you could also walk the Highline before eating at Chelsea Market.

Dinner in Koreatown (near the Empire State Building) is also fun. Ziggy always says "just follow your nose" with where to eat there.

How about ramen? Ippudo Ramen in Hell's Kitchen.

If time allows, and you really want to explore different neighborhoods, Katz's Deli in the Lower East Side for pastrami on rye. Chinatown for whatever strikes your fancy (I follow my nose look at menus to suit my mood, look at food others are eating, and look for clientele is mostly Chinese but also a few smatterings of others - it also helps to have some places in mind based on reviews).

Dinner + entertainment is more uncommon than you might expect. Cafe Wha? might be fun for one night. It's in Greenwich Village and "all ages". It's not a real food destination. It's more about the entertainment.

A really touristy choice for dinner with entertainment would be Ellen's Stardust Diner in Times Square. The forum puts it down (me included) but lots of visitors enjoy it if they are really into the show tune entertainment (vs the food)

For Upper West Side, I really like Zabars. That's more a place to get food to bring "home" or for a picnic, but there is a bit of seating to eat there.

There may be some Harlem spots you want to try since you're near Columbia. Sorry, no suggestions there, but there are good options.

She might like the vibe of something Parisien like Balthazar in Soho. In the Village you might try getting in at either Spotted Pig or Little Owl. If you have any lunch times available, Fred's at Barney's is always fun, great people watching, specially the fashion crowd if she is one who enjoys clothes.

Hey Letoynia C:-) You've got a gazillion options throughout the City;-) FWIW, the area you are staying in offers a plethora of options since it's Columbia U turf.. occupied by loads of international students/professors.. where you'll find everything from Korean to Middle Eastern.. from Ethiopian at Awash, Peruvian at Warique, Indian at Aangan, Cuban at Havana Central, Italian at V&Ts, French at Café du Soleil as well as Le Monde, Greek at Symposium.. the infamous Hungarian Pasty Shop, the largest slice of pizza offered in the City at Coronet Pizza.. best bagels at Absolute Bagels.. and the list goes on and on.. and this is a fraction of what's available within an only 10 blocks radius of the Campus;-)

A good site to check out most of what is available is www.menupages.com/ where you can narrow down options via area as well as cuisine..pricing;-) A popular market always packed with students along with locals is Milano Market.. fantastic;-) West Side Market a couple of blocks further down Broadway on the corner of 110th Street and is open 24X7 (right next to Coronet Pizza and Mel's Burgers;-) If you head down to Zabar's take note that there is no seating at all in the store itself.. they have a café on the corner (separate entrance) with communal seating;-) Happy planning.. and EnJOY!
