Pay per ride metro card

After reading about fares and transfers I'm confused. Pay per ride allows 1 transfer. Going from airport to hotel is 1 transfer from bus to subway. What happens on return trip? Subway to bus would be another transfer. What I'm I missing? Please explain in detail. Arriving at LaGuardia, staying at The Hotel 59W 46th.

you would have to pay a 2d fare (which can cover a transfer) for the return trip.

Do you think that the round trip from/to the airport is one trip?

Going from the airport is one trip with one transfer.

Going to the airport is another trip with one transfer.

The free transfer (2 metrocard uses, the second one being a free transfer) from bus->subway, or from subway->bus, or from bus->bus is during a 2-hour period, not a one-week period. it's meant for you to go from one place to another using two vehicles.

Subway->subway transfers are done on that one Metrocard use by changing at stations with free connecting passageways. Every subway map shows every one of them.

It's like using an airline: you may have a stopover on your flight somehwere, but you can't return for free 10 days later,
