Suggestions for non-typical tourist attractions.

We have 8 adults traveling to the City in a couple weeks. We already have tickets to a Broadway show and to the 9/11 Museum. All of us have been there before. We are looking for other things to do that aren't the typical tourist attractions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Our favorites: a stroll through the Washington Mews (half block north of Washington Square Park and frequently missed by visitors); a walk half-way across the GW Bridge offering the best views of the City (we usually couple this with a visit to the Cloisters); Jane's Carousel in DUMBO (we usually couple this with a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge); the Chinese markets/shops and restaurants in Flushing and a visit to the nearby World's Fair Grounds and Park, and especially a few hours on the water taxis going between Manhattan, Brooklyn and NJ (on warm summer afternoons).

See an off Broadway show. More edgy, more interesting, often cheaper, smaller venue. "Here Lies Love" at the Public Theater is among the very best http://www.herelieslove.com/

Depending on your musical tastes, go to a club that has live performances

When will you be here?

How about learning to swing in the trapeze in the NYC Trapeze School?

I have 2 thoughts...

The Accomplice (accomplicetheshow.com) -- this is part show, part tour, part game. It's a really unique experience and allows you to see the city in a new way. With the 8 of you it will be a blast. I did this for my friends birthday once, and we are all from NYC, and we loved it. Very highly rated on Trip Advisor as well.

Watson Adventures (Watsonadventures.com) -- they offer a variety of scavenger hunts throughout NYC and Brooklyn, including places like The Met and Grand Central. It's really fun, and you are exploring the city in a unique way. I have done this a few times, and have many friends that are from the area that have enjoyed this immensely.

I just thought of one more....

Check out sidetour.com

There are over 60 unique experiences...that change all of the time. Right now, some examples are:

-- making macaroons with a NYC pastry chef

-- taking a private sailboat tour

-- an unconventional tour of the a Museum of Natural History

-- explore NYC parks with a naturalist

We took a tour of the Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn and it was fascinating! You book a ride on a trolley bus which takes about an hour around the cemetery and we had a most informative guide who pointed out the graves of historic and important people. When we reached Leonard Bernsteins grave, we gathered around it and the guide who had met him and adored him sang a selection from West Side Story! It was so charming and we really enjoyed that afternoon. Afterwards it is easy to get a bus into Brooklyn and look at the lovely streets of Brownstone houses and then walk back into Manhattan via the Broooklyn Bridge. It was a really good day. We also enjoyed the tram (cable car) to Roosevelt Island and looking round the beautiful St George's theatre on Staten Island.

How long will you be there for?

Go to an Eataly cooking class!

It's a great set up, they do the cooking and you watch, you get to eat what they cook, they pair some wines with the meal and then you take home the recipes.

We have the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing Meadows Park. This has a scale model of NYC will every building as of the last update. There is also the largest display of Tiffany lamps in the city. Looking south from the #7 train at Junction Blvd, you can see the steelwork for a school rising on the site of the Tiffany Studios where the lamps were made. Nearby Flushing has many Asian restaurants.

+1 for off-and off-off Broadway shows. There are many locations and performances and rarely tourists in the audience.
