Nothing in NYC is too far away. That is what the subway is for. There is no one central location for tourists. No matter what you stay near you are going to travel to someplace else.

That Manhattan Sideways website is great, I've checked out a couple of streets already. It's funny how you can walk past things if you don't know they are there in the first place.

No reason to limit yourself to W 37th St. You might want to head to 38th, 39th or heck even 48th or 25th!

Enter your hotel name on maps.google.com. Zoom in to the basic area (but no reason to zoom in too close), then start typing things that interest you. Type Restaurants and it will show you nearby restaurants. You can hover over dots, see names and their google ratings, and google for other info about the restaurants (including other ratings) in another browser tab. Likewise for "bars", "grocery", "starbucks", "steak", etc.

For dinner especially, there is no reason to limit yourself to the immediate vicinity of your hotel.

You might even want to push the limit and go to East 37th Street and do some exploring. Get out and walk, you'll find anything you'll need.

I briefly worked on West 37th - you're in the land of sample sales. Not high end designer sample sales, but cheap cheap stuff! Every day another store has a $5-10 shirt sale.

That neighborhood is rough in prime business hours, as far as crowded sidewalks but otherwise, it's fine. There are a lot of good food options on 9th Ave in the 30s. Desmond's Steakhouse at 38th and 7th is very good - looks dreary from the outside (old OTB location) but it's nice inside and the food/happy hour oyster specials are excellent. Especially the sliced smoked bacon!
