Christmas in New York

Hi guys, will be spending Christmas in New York (12-27 Dec). Besides the beautiful Christmas lightings, are there places or events that we can go to experience Christmas in NY?

Christmas decorations are unexpectedly limited to Rockefeller Center and adjacent areas of Fifth Avenue. Macy's has some over at Herald Square. Other world cities have more. For many years, the largest ethnic group in the city did not celebrate Christmas and I suspect this has historically dampened decorations though other groups now predominate.

There are temporary booths in Union Square, Bryant Park, and in Grand Central Terminal that sell gift items. Many churches have holiday concerts. St. Thomas (Episcopal) on Fifth at 53rd St. is noted for this. The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes is probably the most famous holiday show in the city.

I think NYC has great Christmas decorations, and I say that having spent the holidays in many different places in the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The decorations are not limited to the Rockefeller Center area, although that's where some of the most 'spectacular' displays are.

Here is the 2013 NYC holiday season thread; Thanksgiving 2013 was November 26th and Thanksgiving 2014 will be November 27th, so most of the dates *should* just shift by a day, though few things have been announced/confirmed at this point:

Here are some publicly posted photos I've taken of the holiday season in NYC:

NYC DE Jenny has also spent two recent Decembers in NYC and should have some great suggestions!

Fox's mentions of the special holiday concerts is a good one - many churches will have them and also look at the schedules at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The ballet will be performing the Nutcracker, and of course there's the Rockettes show as well.

Although many shops and museums will be closed, some of the places you can do/see/visit on Christmas Day itself include the Radio City Christmas Spectacular (Rockettes show), Top of the Rock or Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, Staten Island Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, one of the zoos, one or more of the smaller parks, the Christmas window displays in Midtown (see the holiday 2013 thread for a mapped walk), and/or neighborhoods with interesting architecture and decorations (the photos in the links might give you some ideas).

Have a great trip!

There are decorations and Xmas trees in many places -- Bryant park and Lincoln center are examples. Lots of stores decorate as well, and museums have trees (AMNH, the Met).
