Where to Stay

We are two retired couples planning to visit NYC for 5 days in May next year. We would like to take in a show, and view some of the sights. Since we have never been there before, we would appreciate a recommendation as to which area to stay in that will not involve to much travel to get to the highlights. We are considering Brooklyn because hotels seem to be a little more affordable there, but will it mean a lot time traveling to and fro? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. We were looking at renting an apartment, but have now learned that this is not legal.

We appreciate any and all help you can offer.

Hey EdMe:-) If you're planning on visiting sites, hitting the theater.. stay in the City:-) Convenient as well if looking to head back to drop off any souvvies off.. whatever;-) Having said that, dates (although you're pretty early looking for May) and a budget spread would help the good folks here make some recs;-) Best.. and EnJOY!

Thank you Litsa for your prompt reply. We would prefer an apartment type hotel if possible, and would be willing to share a bedroom (but not a bed!) We are very flexible, and if possible would like to pay about $300.00 a night (plus taxes!).

Apartment style hotels are just as good as an apartment in most cases.

Look at Radio City Apartments for that budget. Also Candlewood Suites possibly. Both in midtown but not in the craziness of Times Square.

Last month my husband & I stayed at the affinia shelburne. It was a good hotel in a good location. We walked to many sites. It is not as expensive as most of the hotels in NYC. We would stay here again.

May can be pricey, and it's too early to see realistic rates for most hotels. You may find that apartment style hotels are priced higher than $300 for 4 people, but it will depend on your exact dates..

One option to check would be one of the apartment-style suites at ChelseaLodge.com Very near the Highline. Convenient location.

The "sights" and points of interest are spread out. You'll be using the subway to get around, so the most important thing is to be near the subway, and (preferably) to have a few fun things in your immediate neighborhood so you don't always feel like you have to make a plan and travel somewhere.

Unfortunately the apt suites at Chelsea Lodge only have a queen bed and a sofabed. I don't think a sofabed would be very comfortable for 5 nights. At that time of year $300/night is not likely to yield much for 4 people in Manhattan. Long Island City is closer to many of the midtown attractions than Brooklyn. Home2 Suites the should have some suites with 2 queen beds and you'd be about a 10 minute subway ride to midtown Manhattan.

If you want you want to have a look at prices for your dates of suite hotels in Manhattan

Nycsalisbury.com

Milburnhotel.com

And aforementioned

Radiocityapartments.com

Are typically cheapest with 2 double beds. Best Western Hospitality, the San Carlos and the Affinia hotels have 2 queen beds in their 2 bedded suites. You might check pricing with the London based co.

Www.apartments2 book.com

As they sometimes have better rates.
