There are many Hiltons. Which one are you staying at?

To get a head start on other questions you'll be asked, for how long will you be in New York? If more than a few days then you'll want a weekly unlimited Metrocard in any event.

How many are you? This is relevant for the AirTrain.

Take the AirTrain to Jamaica (NOT Howard Beach) and take the Manhattan-bound E train to 7th Ave station. You'll be one block from the hotel.

You pay with a Metrocard. You'll need $5 on the Metrocard to pay for the AirTrain, and then you can either use an additional $2.50 on the card to pay for the subway, or you can get an unlimited 7-day Metrocard to pay for the subway ride. (Not the AirTrain.)

Although getting off at 7th Avenue is fine, I'd be inclined to get off the E at the prevous stop, 5th Avenue. Your hotel is on 6th Avenue, between 53rd and 54th. The exit at the front end of the 5th Avenue station is part way down the block toward 6th Avenue, so slightly closer (and you'll be getting off one stop sooner.)

In addition, although you'll have stairs for the last flight to street level, there are escalators from platforms to the mezzanine.

Again, either will work and there's not much difference. This is an easy trip.
