coat/ jacket in September?

coat/ jacket in September?

I will be travelling to NYC mid September 2014 and will stay till the end of the month. The temperature predictions show variation from 80 to 50 deg F. What kind of coat or jacket would you recommended? Will a hip length 50% wool 40% polyester coat do or is a trench better suited? I hail from the tropics and am not used to chilly weather and don't understand warm clothing either. Any inputs appreciated..thanks!

In normal times, something lighter than a typical suit jacket would be good in case of cool weather. These are often cotton/polyester without filling and waist long. We call these things "wind breakers". Some examples of these are shown at Google images. Short sleeve shirts are often worn in Sept, but this starts to change in Oct.

September is typically pretty warm but it can have chilly mornings/evenings and if it's rainy, can feel colder than summer rain.

For September I've got an unlined trench for work/formal and a windbreaker type jacket or zip up sweatshirt type hoodie for casual. (Unlined trench= very light lining inside, not heavy material. Some trenchcoats have a heavy lining that can zip out.)

If you're not sure and if you're prone to feeling chilly, bring layers so that you can adjust for your own comfort level. Undershirts, button-down shirts long and short sleeved. Light jacket. Sweatshirt or sweater that you can tie around your neck or waist during noontime heat but that will come in handy if you're out at night and it gets colder.

Wool would be overkill. A trench would be better and more flexible. Plan to bring another layer (e.g. a cardigan) to wear underneath the jacket just in case you get unseasonably cool weather, or find that you are unaccustomed to cooler temperatures.. There may be times where you want to use that cardigan as your primary outer layer.
