Natural history museum

Hi do we need to buy an admission ticket or can we just make a donation. If so what is an acceptable amount. We are a part of five and would probably just spend a couple of hours here. Thanks

http://www.amnh.org/tickets

they suggest you pay 22$, but you are free to make it less ....

What's acceptable is what you can afford, I guess, but no one will think less of you if you can only pay like 5$ each ..... 10$ would be better .... so would 15$ ...^_^, but really, it's your call

As per post #1 you have the choice. If you pre-purchase the tickets online you will need to pay the full amount. Also there is a seperate charge for entry into areas such as the planetarium. However general admission is pay what you want and how much you want to pay is a personal thing that we can't advise you on, it's your choice to make.

It's a donation. You can decide what is appropriate.

If you are only going to spend a couple of hours, it sounds like you will NOT be going to any of the special exhibits, which might be a shame (depending on what they are and what your interests are).

The special exhibits are timed entry so you do need to decide in advance, and buying those slots in advance will probably define your cost.

On the other hand, if you want to think of it in terms of "spending a couple hours", how long is a play or a concert? or a visit to the doctor or the dentist? or getting your hair done at a good salon? but how much are you willing to pay for that?

If you want to explore the moral issue of paying .01 per person, have a look at this very long thread. When I was a pre-teen, and lived north of the MONH, it was absolutely free to everything in the museums, including sky shows in the planetarium.

If you want to pay less than the suggested amount, you'll have to get your tickets from a cashier at the main entrance - you won't be able to buy them online on advance or from one of the kiosks at the museum.

AMNH has ~45 permanent exhibition halls, more than you can see in a couple of hours, so you should be fine with skipping the special exhibitions, planetarium show, and IMAX movie.

Enjoy!

You can pay what you want, but if you want to see the special exhibits, you must pay the suggested amount plus the fee for exhibits.

Like everyone said it is pay what you want (when you get there...not online) I am very glad we didn't pay full price, as we were only there for maybe one hour. It was hot, crowded (lots of school groups) and (sorry) but not that interesting. If you have been to the Smithsonian one in Washington DC this one is pretty much the same. IMO. We were fascinated with the huge meteorite though. I know everyone has different tastes, so your family might enjoy it more. And you might like to do the special exhibits too. Might be worth it. Have fun!

Jumping in here. So if it is pay what you like who do you pay? Is it an actual person or do you put it in a donation box?

I don't want to be looked at funny if we don't pay the right amount!
