what to do with a family in El Paso

Travelling to El Paso in sept 2014 with family of 4 (2 children aged 11 & 14), we want to do some outlet shopping and buy some boots, but what else is there to do? Where should we stay? Is it safe to cross over into mexico? I would be really grateful of any advice thanks, Aussie traveller's.

Take a ride in the tramway at Franklin Mountains State Park located a few minutes from downtown. …state.tx.us/state-parks/franklin-mountains Click "El Paso" above the title to your post to see other things to do in EP. Hueco Tanks State Park is a half hour drive from EP for hiking and pictographs.

There's lots to see and do in southern New Mexico and West Texas. If you provide your itinerary and the time you have we can provide advice.

It is, in no uncertain terms, NOT safe to cross over into Juarez. Juarez has been dubbed "the most dangerous city in the world" for good reason--shootings in broad daylight, as well as at night, kidnappings, etc. Don't even THINK about going over there.

Hi

thanks for your reply, we will be arriving on September 6th about lunchtime after driving from Albuquerque and we are in El Paso untill lunch on sept 8th as we need to drive to Fort stockton or Ozona as an overnight stay on the way to San Antonio with 2 nights there before heading to New Orleans. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

White Sands National Monument is worth a detour on the way to El Paso. I suggest only one night in EP. Then drive to Big Bend National Park. Stay two nights there preferably in Chisos Mountains Lodge, the only lodging in the park. If that's unavailable try nearby Terlingua which is an interesting spot. San Antonio is about a seven hour drive from the lodge.

If Big Bend is further out of your way than you care to travel, you could head up to Carlsbad Caverns instead. Your kids are a perfect age for appreciating it. Head up in the morning, do the caverns in the afternoon, spend the night nearby, then on to Fort Stockton the next day.

A few suggestions from someone who lives here and has 4 boys.

1. The EL Paso Zoo is a small zoo but a fun day trip. If you are a member of another zoo you can sometimes get a discount. We usually go in the morning because it gets pretty hot here. There is a train ride that you can do which my kids love but may not be as fun for older kids. There is also a splash zone in the middle of the zoo so that the kids can get wet.

2. There are several museums that are in the downtown area. They can be found on one of the city websites. We have been to some but not all.

3. Not too far in New Mexico there is an airplane museum which is nice. Here is a link

Enjoy your stay!

Chamizal National Memorial has a number of activities; the September calendar is not up yet, but you can get a feel for what's there from their website: www.nps.gov/cham/planyourvisit/index.htm

I'm sure they would love climbing the rocks at Franklin Mountains State Park and Hueco Tanks State Park. You can also visit the Border Patrol Museum. I wouldn't cross into Mexico. Juarez is an extremely violent, high-crime city and you would have to pass through it in order to get to any nice places in Mexico. Cross at your own risk. You can also visit Historic Mesilla in nearby Las Cruces- there's a lot of shopping there. A little farther north is Alamogordo, where White Sands National Monument is. Take plenty of water if you go. Kids can go sledding on the dunes! Good luck and safe travels!

Also a trip up into the mountains to either Inn of the Mountain Gods, Ruidoso, or Cloudcroft is a wonderful outing. Long day, though, if you don't stay overnight. A trip to either the mountains or White Sands can be combined with the National Solar Observatory near Alamogordo, NM.
