Cumberland - is booked up really booked up?

We have been camping at Cumberland many times. This year we waited too late to make reservations between Christmas and New Years and they are filled up till later than we can make it. Last year we also did not get our first choice on days to go over but when we were waiting for the ferry, some guys were behind us who did not even have reservations. They just got there very early and got on a waiting list and told us they never make reservations and always get ferry seats and camping spots. Has anyone had specific experience in this regard? There will be 4 of us, camping in back country for a few nights. We have to drive arpound 700 miles so it's gonna be scary going without reservations. Were the guys right and are there always cancellations and extra seats and campsites? The Parks people were not helpful in answering any of this.

Well there are often cancellations but I wouldn't say always. It would be a bit of a gamble. Maybe you should try it but with a backup plan, such as the Okefenokee.

Thanks for the reply. and your suggestion of the Okefenoke is great - we have been there once and always wanted to return. Actually we tried calling Cumberland every day and voila, 5 spaces suddenly appeared. So we are set.
