Can you recommend any places to visit in Mammoth during Dec?

Hi,

We will be visiting Mammoth during Christmas weekend. This is our first trip to Mammoth. Other than skiing and snow related activities, can you guys recommend some places for sightseeing? Thinking of visiting Mono lake, Convict lake, June lake. Is there any other places that is open now which we can visit? Skipping yosemite since we have already been there.

Thanks in advance,

Neethu

Yosemite wouldn't be feasible anyway, with Tioga Pass closed. And Devil's Postpile National Monument is closed to vehicles in winter (open to snowshoe or x-c ski).

Mono Lake is about a half hour north of Mammoth, and is accessible all year. It's one of California's unique natural wonders, and a testimony to the effects of water use policy and environmental preservation. There are two visitors centers for the lake in Lee Vining and several places where you can drive a car to walking distance of the lake to see marshes and birds or get close to the tufa.

Check for road and park conditions for CA Hwy 270 if interested in the ghost town of Bodie. The road is sometimes closed and sometimes open in winter, depending on recent snowfall (the ghost town is about 8000 feet in elevation).

Be aware that north of Mono Lake, the highest point anywhere on 395 is Conway Summit at 8100 feet, and snow and high winds are possible. This is true of much of the Eastern Sierra north of Lone Pine (elevation about 4000 feet). And if you are going all the way on 395, check my "Users' Guide to Lone Pine" for lots to see and do around that area before or after your time at Mammoth.

Hi Frisco_Roadrunner,

Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response. Mono lake is absolutely in our list. I checked with a tour company regarding Bodie and they are saying it’s not accessible now. We are sticking around just the mammoth area for now since it’s a short trip(3 days). We are also flying so no car. Thinking of taking the local shuttle to go around mammoth lakes and for sightseeing trying for a custom tour with a tour company. We are not really interested in skiiing as we have never tried it. We have other snow activities planned. If we must try skiing, what do you recommend? Cross country or Downhill?

Thank you.
