Where to stay????

We are a family of 4 (2 adults/2 kids aged 16 & 13) from Australia planning on staying at Mammoth 21-26th Dec this year. I am having trouble picturing the area and where to stay. I have been looking at places that are in the Village "close to the gondola". Does this mean that to get to the ski runs you need to take this gondola or do you ski from the Village? I am not a skier (the Mum) and so want to be close to shops/spas etc whilst the rest are off skiing - hence looking in the Village. Is this the way to go or do you stay "on the mountain" ???

Any advice greatly appreciated! Lisa Dawes

Yes, the Village is where you would want to stay to be close to shops, etc. The skiers take the Gondola up to get to the ski area. There are very few places to stay that are right at the ski area, and that would place you farther from being in town and close to shops. However, there is a free shuttle that can take you places you would want to go to shop.

Yoga chick was right on but there is more. The gondola ends at the ski area, which is surrounded by "walk to lifts" lodging. So in the morning, the skiers can walk to the slopes, and you can ride the gondola back "down" into the village, and then home again. The lodging prices at the walk to lifts by Canyon Lodge are not cheap, but they will be a whole lot less expensive than staying in the Village which is the highest rates of anywhere to stay in Mammoth. City Concierge can help you with your travel plans as they book everywhere. You should plan now as the 2 weeks of Christmas week are sold out and the good accommodations go first. There are also the condos and townhomes that are in town, so you could walk to shops there, which is a different area than The Village, and there are free buses to the slopes, which are about .75 mile to say Eagle Lodge which is another part of the mountain.

Just be aware that the shopping at the village is not much. So you'll be done in an afternoon:

I guess the point is don't pick the village for the shopping. If you stay on a shuttle line you can get around pretty easily to anywhere while your family skies.

We had a very nice stay at The Westin Monache in Mammoth. This is a beautiful property with a great pool and jacuzzi area and a nice shuttle service. One evening we took it to The Tamarack Lodge for dinner.

Whitebark is a great restaurant at The Westin Monache where we enjoyed appetizers and lunch. The rooms are spacious and very clean and beds very comfortable here. We would definitely return to The Westin next time we're in Mammorth. :)
