Mammoth v Tahoe

Going to California next Easter March/ Apriland want to ski. Have read the reviews of resorts and hotels and it down to Tahoe against Mammoth.

We have had a ski holiday in Tahoe and enjoyed it but wanted to try a new resort.

What do I do Jack?

If you've been to Tahoe, then go to Mammoth. Tahoe, though, has more nightlife...

Mammoth doesn't have the views that Tahoe has. The best views of Lake Tahoe are from Heavenly Valley

You could try Kirkwood - there is a shuttle from Lake Tahoe - or you could stay right by the slopes there - it has the deepest snow in North America. The Wall is like a big wall and a big challenge - but it also has more gentle slopes.

Tahoe might offer more options depending on the snow.

Homewood at Tahoe has added a new lift and is a low cost one day option for example.

Have you done all the Tahoe resorts?

If there is snow Diamond Peak is worth one day - if there's not good snow on it avoid it. Mt Rose is another that has recently upgraded its lifts and is worth one day.

Then there are the big ones - Squaw and Heavenly which you've probably done. And next, Alpine Meadows.

Sugar Bowl is a little away from Lake Tahoe on Rte 80 and is good for 2 days. There is a hotel right there and you get to it by an old tiny gondola - mid-week it could be a lovely place.

So from Tahoe you have more variety than Mammoth - but Mammoth does have a big mountain and you can also go to June Mountain. Avoid American holidays if you got to Mammoth though - many southern Californians go there.

Have you considered flying from Vegas to Kelowna and skiing at Big White in Canada - that is very good - see www.bigwhite.com - probably costs less and finer snow than either place.

We have always done Tahoe since we are so close. In January we went to Mammoth and found that it was fantastic. The mountain is huge and there are tons of runs. Mammoth would be a great change if you've already been to Tahoe.
