Longwood Gardens query

Hi,

We are spending a week in Philadelphia and want to visit Longwood Gardens. We won't have a car, so can we get public transport or do we need to take a taxi? We are staying at the Loews on Market Street.

Thanks,

David

I don't think either is an option. Longwood Gardens is located near Oxford PA, about a 35 mile drive from where you are staying. There is almost ZERO public transit out there other than light rail, which does not go near the gardens..

Your only real cost effective option is to rent a car for the day. A taxi would probably be $60-70 each way. A pre-booked sedan probably $80 each way plus tip.

An alternative is to visit Chanticleer, which is accesible by public transit. Chanticleer is not as expansive as Longwood, but a wonderful garden nevertheless. Directions are on their website:

Longwood is east of Kennett Square, PA. It is about 35 miles from your hotel. Oxford is another 20 minutes southwest.

But it's still not easy to get there via public transportation. On Longwood's site, there's this: "The bus and train stations nearest to Longwood are 12 miles away in Wilmington, Delaware." So you could take a train from Philadelphia to Wilmington, then get a cab. Probably still quite pricey. Here's a Wilmington cab company; you could call and ask about the fare:

Yellow Cab of Delaware 302-658-7321.

Chanticleer is completely different -- much smaller but absolutely spectacular, so if you decide on that you'll have a great garden visit.

To Philly TA members: Are there any organized bus tours of the Philadelphia countryside that might go to Longwood Gardens? A quick Google search didn't turn up any but, if they exist, a tour might be a good choice for DWM.

In addition to taking either the R2 train or Acela to Wilmington, Delaware, DWM could take the R3 to Media, PA - - though finding a taxi would be easier in Wilmington.

The only tours that run there are private groups (usually garden societies, et. al). The last public tour closed about 6 years ago due to lack of people.

Thanks everyone,

That's all useful - if not quite what I was hoping for!
