14 days touring starting in Philadelphia- where to go?

For the past 6 years my husband and I have been flying out to USA and touring different states. This year we are thinking of Pennsylvania. We will fly in to Philadelphia and stay 3 nights and looking for ideas for itinerary thereafter. We like sightseeing, shopping, theme parks, quaint villages, and a bit of sunbathing!

With 14 days, you should spend additinal time in Philadelphia. There are several areas very nearby to visit, and basing yourself in the city would make sense. You can spend two days visiting places in Bucks County:

Doylestown for the Mercer Museum and Fontill Mansion http://www.mercermuseum.org/

Lahaska for Peddler's Village,

New Hope, PA/Lambertville, New Jersey

Washington Crossing PA/NJ,

River Road (scenic drive along the Delaware River)

and another day or two in Chester County:

Brandywine Batlefield

Longwood Gardens http://www.longwoodgardens.org/,

Winterthur http://www.winterthur.org/

Valley Forge

Bucks and Chester Counties are actually the prettiest parts of the state. Other visitors like to visit Lancaster County (Amish and Mennontie farms and towns such as Bird In Hand and Intercourse), as well as Hershey (chocolatetown!)

You should also visit Falling Water, which is Frank Lloyd Wright's house near Pittsburgh. The rest of the state is rather dull. The Poconos are favored by some, but the only places worth visiting there, IMO, are Bushkill Falls and Jim Thorpe (do a bike ride down the rail trail).

I agree with Owyln and would add a visit to the New Jersey shore. Possible destinations depending on your interest are:

Atlantic City for glitzy casinos and shopping

Wildwood for Doo-Wop era architecture and boardwalk scene

Ocean City for a more family friendly atmosphere

Cape May for Victorian charm, nearby lighthouse and bird sanctuary

Great- there seems to be loads to do. Can see I will have alot of planning to do! I love Vegas (although we don't gamble) because of all the themed hotels. Will probably visit Atlantic City just to see how it compares!

To be frank, AC does not even come close to comparing to Vegas on a themed hotel basis. They offer a comparable gambling and nightlife scene, and come close in food, but you won't find the same level of hotel creativity by a long short... BUT and its a big but, AC has an Ocean.

With 14 days total are you looking at heading North or South out of Philly. If you haven't been, you can do a nice 14 day itinerary flying into either Boston or NYC and heading south to DC, all by train.

And as long as we are prying you out of Pennsylvania, I agree with the NJ Shore and Washington DC suggestions. If you've never been to DC, spend half your time in Philadelphia and vicinity (including a day trip to the NJ shore), and the rest in DC.

All of the above can be done by train (NJ shore would limit you to Atlantic City, though). You can even visit Doylestown by train, though the other outlying areas, no.

If you are interested in DC, let us know, and we can give some advice before sending you to the DC forum.

We have been to Washington DC and New York and loved both. Think we may include a couple of days in New York as it is 9 years since we were last there. So much to do and so little time!

So assuming 5-6 days in the Philly area, what are your other targeted destinations?

Not worked it out yet. Possibly 4 nights Philadelphia, 4 nights Dutch country roads, 3 nights New York, 2 nights New Jersey shore and 1 night open to suggestions! Don't want to spend too much time travelling. Couple of hours at a time is ideal.

Pennsylvania Dutch country is good for one day. I strongly suggest that you revisit my earlier suggestions regarding Bucks and Chester counties. BTW, there are wineries in both, though Sandcastle in Bucks is far superior to the overrated Chadds Ford Winery in Chester County.

Base yourself in Philadelphia, and do a day trip to Lancaster County (Pa Dutch). You can also do day trips to the NJ Shore, or, stay over in one before going up to NY. You will need 4 days in Philadelphia to see most of the sites here, so take the 4 nights you would have spent driving around in Pa Dutch country and apply them to Bucks/Chester Counties and the NJ shore day trips.

If the weather is nice, you could spend several days at the Jersey Shore. It all depends on your interests and the pace of travel that you like. If staying in Ocean City, I highly recommend this B&B as a place to stay. Very friendly and free use of bicycles! tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g46696-d79521-R…

If you decide to stay in Lancaster County, consider one of the bed and breakfast farms padutchcountry.com/lodging/lancaster-farm-st…
