I'll be up in Philly for a couple days next week. I am vegetarian and I was wondering where I would be able to recieve some nourishment?

I would very highly recommend visiting Horizons Cafe, at 611 S. 7th St (near the intersection of 7th and South Sts. It's vegan, and excellent. They just moved to this location, after being in the burbs for the past 12 years. They have a very loyal following, and a growing following. Here is their website: www.horizonscafe.com

If you get the chance, don't miss it - what the chef does with tofu and seitan and vegetables converts even meat-eaters. Desserts are great, and you'll never, ever miss the dairy, although you'll swear it's there!

Enjoy your visit. If you eat there, would love to know what you think...

The Reading Terminal Market (12th & Filbert) has a wealth of food vendors, including Basic 4 Vegetarian. The Market began as a farmers' market over 100 years ago and now combines those elements with prepared foods. The vibe is great - great diversity and warmth.

Options in Chinatown: Harmony at 135 N. 9th St. and Cherry Street Vegetarian at 1010 Cherry St.

Also,

Core de Roma (Italian)at 214 South St.

Cedars (Lebanese) 616 S. 2nd

Ariana (Afghan) 134 Chestnut St.

Also, Charles Plaza on N 10th Street (Chinatown) is supposed to be good - have a friend who likes it alot. Hope that helps!

In the center city area there are alot of choices for you.

I agree with emwimom about the Reading Terminal Market. The place is literally a mosaic of local foods. Many great places that are vegetarian or have good vegetarian options.

Azure (a personal favorite), 931 N. 2nd St.

Kingdom of Vegetarians, 129 North 11th Street

Samosa Indian, 1214 Walnut St.

Cherry Street Chinese Vegetarian, 1010 Cherry St.

Harmony Chinese, 135 North 9th Street

Santa Fe Burritos, 1625 Chestnut Street

I recently ate at Charles Plaza, and I too can vouch for it. The vegetarian selection is done well, and I never missed the meat. They serve meat/chicken/seafood too, but their veggie selection is large. A very good choice for vegetarians (or flexitarians). Also, the owner is very attentive to customers - they pay attention to detail there. Funny, for all the years I've eaten in Chinatown, I never knew about this place; but it's now added to my "list".

I love Kingdom of Vegetarians - I think they have some of the best vegetarian food I have ever eaten and their prices are wonderful for what you get! Nice environment and good service too.

I'd like to warn all vegetarians in Philadelphia, and anyone else, not to go to New Samosa on 1214 Walnut St. I ate there in August 2007 and was stunned at how awful it was, and overpriced. I had the "curry chicken," which, like all the meat dishes there, was made of soy the texture of marshmallow. The curry sauce was sickeningly sweet. STAY AWAY!

Horizons Cafe has by the the best vegetarian food in the city, and being a vegetarian, I know them all. Horizons is expensive, but well worth it. You MUST have reservations on Friday or Saturday night. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Another Chinese place not mentioned is Pagoda Noodle, on Sansom Walk between Front and 2nd Street. It's regular Chinese food, but they have some excellent vegtarian selections. Others have mentioned the other places. Mama's is more of a lunch/takeout place, but very good. The menu is very limited and everything is fried, but very good.
