Advice needed: train from suburbs to downtown Philly

We are driving to see a number of PA sites: 93 Memorial and Gettysburg. Not interested in driving into downtown Philadelphia. Would really like to stay in a suburb, near train station, and ride into see the historical sites. Coming from Gettysburg, may I have some advice on suburb locations? Thank you!

This is the map for SEPTA, the regional rail system. http://www.septa.org/maps/system/

The problem is that many of the suburban rail stations do not have enough parking on weekdays. So you could plan to take a commuter train but not be able to find a parking spot at the station after 7 or 7:30.

Would you consider an Amtrak train from Harrisburg or Lancaster? Longer trip, more expensive because it's Amtrak and not SEPTA. But I think there is adequate parking. Much nicer and faster train, too.

If you do Amtrak, not Lancaster -- there is major construction ongoing around the station and parking is at a premium. Elizabethtown might be a good hopping on spot. If you go further down the line toward Philadelphia, there are a number of good station options as well, but I can't advise on the parking situation at them as I never depart from there.

It will be inconvenient for you to stay in the suburbs, I am not sure what your objection to driving into Philly would be, the traffic isn't bad and the directions are not difficult. Or, are you worried about crime in Philly? Because the tourist area is very safe and I would have no concerns there.

If you change your mind about staying in the city, for the historic area, you could stay in the brand new Hotel Monaco (I noted that your TA profile says your traveling style is "nothing but the best") and Monaco is one of the newest and nicest hotels in the historic area. You can walk out of your hotel and be directly at Independence Park. http://www.monaco-philadelphia.com/

If you insist on staying in the suburbs, one option that comes to mind is the Wayne Hotel. The hotel itself may not be 4 star quality but it is walkable to the regional rail train station in Wayne, PA (so you don't have to worry about parking at the station). http://www.waynehotel.com/

Another reason I thought of Wayne, aside from its convenience to the train station, is that the center of Wayne offers a cute though small downtown shopping area, with some good restaurants. I recently enjoyed a meal at Teresa's Next Door, and if you are a beer lover its definitely worth a visit for dinner or just a drink. http://www.teresas-cafe.com/

How many days are you spending in Philadelphia? Where are you going when you leave Philadelphia? Is the car a rental that you can return before or when you get here, or is it your own car?

Also, I meant to add the link for SEPTA regional rail service, should you decide to stay in Wayne or another suburb. http://septa.org/service/rail/

From Wayne you would take the Paoli/Thorndale line. The fare depends on time of day and whether you have purchased your ticket at the ticket office (limited hours) or on the train (costs more). For two people to take the train into Philly from Wayne roundtrip per day is about $28.
