Where to go using Philadelphia as a base?

We're a family of 4 with 2 teenage girls, near Manchester UK. One of the few airports we can fly non stop to from Manchester is Philadelphia.

A few years ago, we flew that journey and explored a lot of West Virginia and North Carolina, by car, staying at 4 or 5 locations.

We are considering flying to Philadelphia again for 2 weeks in August 2014...but struggling for ideas of where to go. I was thinking of going in a northern direction, possibly a few days in NYC, but beyonf that, I just don't know the area well enough. A few days at a place with a beach would be nice. I don't really want to drive more than about 1000 miles in total.

Any ideas to provide inspiration would be most welcome!

Ocean City MD would be a good beach choice. Staying there gives to day trip opportunities to Cape May NJ, a charming town with Victorian houses and Rehoboth DE to the north. To the south is Assateage which is an island with wild ponies and Chincoteague another Island which includes a fishing town and more ponies. Baltimore MD and Washington DC are less than a two hour drive from Philadelphia and New Hope PA is a good day trip.

Between Philly, the beach, and NYC you could easily fill two weeks, especially if you are losing a couple of days to flying.

Ocean CIty, New Jersey, is a great family beachtown. Good boardwalk with stores, amusements, and eateries, and quite a range of restaurants off the boardwalk (note that no alcohol is sold or served in O.C.). A short drive to the south is the charming Victorian resort town of Cape May. To the North is Atlantic CIty. For a short visit I recomment staying at The Forum Inn www.theforumocnj.com.

This article on day trips from Philly points out most of the places of interest within a short drive from Philly. You could use this list to map out a road trip itinerary as well. tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60795-s407/Philadelp…

The Eastern Shore of MD, mentioned above, is also a good destination. easternshorevisitor.com/maryland-eastern-sho…

It might help if you mentioned the types of things you like to see, and do, on a typical vacation.

The OP asked about going north from Philly. Any input on that?

Montreal is a straight shot North.

Also, I have done a few road trips that may or may not be of interest to the OP

From NYC, I would consider The Hudson River Valley area and even perhaps, heading East toward The Hamptons, Shelter Island & the North Fork of Long Island. Other spots North might include stops in Southern CT & Newport Rhode Island etc.

I love Montreal and it would be a good choice if the OP has enough time. Philadelphia to Montreal is about a 7 to 8 hour drive, which might be too far. Other places beyond NYC definitely would include New England.

I definitely think a return trip is an excellent idea. Several great options listed by the other posters. NYC and the Jersey Shore would fit in well. You could consider using a combination of public transit and rental car depending on your destinations. NYC is best reached by train or bus.
