Daytrip to Gettyburg over Memorial Day weekend - what to do?

We have decided (on short notice) to take a daytrip to Gettysburg this Saturday. None of us been there before. Does anyone have a suggested list of things you recommend 1st-timers make sure they see? Which Battlefield Tours? Which Museums? We've been trying to read as much as we can but there seems like a like of options!

Our group will be mainly adults with children in the 10 - 12 age range.

Thank you!

Start out early at the visitor's center. See the artifacts and the cyclorama painting.

This weekend it would be wise to reserve a licensed battlefield guide in advance. You can do that from the GNMP site or see other posts on this site for a link. The guide will drive your car around and you'll get out at several locations of interest. Tours take about 2 hours and you can ask as many questions as you want. Ask for a guide who is good with children.

There may be ranger walks going on. Those are free and they keep you moving all over the battlefield.

The other option is the bus tour. There is a doubledecker bus, which kids seem to like. It plays a tape which is not as interesting as a live guide.

There are usually a couple of encampments around and reenactors wandering about. There are also 14 ghost tour businesses in town if you're into that.

The parade's not until Monday, but there are usually several thousand reenactors in that, so they'll be arriving over the weekend and wandering around in costume.

The battlefield's about 26 square miles, so there's enough to keep you busy if you try. There are souvenir stores around town along with a couple of smaller museums. Some charge a fee, some don't.

The guides for private tours at the site vs. private guides from off=site.....any thoughts on whether one is better than the other?

I'm not sure what you mean by private guides off site. The battlefield guides are all licensed by the national park service and reserved through the visitor's center, whether you call/email in advance or just show up. They drive your car around the battlefield so you can look around.

The Tour Center uses a bus for the same basic tour route. One bus has a tape recording, another uses a live battlefield guide. That depends on the time of day you go.

Tours of the battlefield must be done by licensed guides. It's the law.

I've seen posts about private guides from companies outside of the national park service. There seem to be various companies that provide this service?

But I've been doing research today and plan to call tomorrow tontry to get a reservation for in the later afternoon through the park service.

Only the LBGs (licensed battlefield guides) are allowed to conduct tours of the battlefield. There are horse tours with an LBG, bike tours with an LBG and segway tours that either take an LBG or play a tape. Horse, bike, seg tours are private companies. NPS runs the visitor's center and schedules the LBGs.

There is also a new organization in town that runs town tours off the battlefield. Those people are also tested and certified. And of course there are 14 different ghost tour businesses up the down the streets.
