Repeat Gettysburg visitors- looking for something new.

Hello! My husband and I visit Gettysburg a couple of times a year. I love it there but I feel like I have seen/done it all. What I'm looking for is a local who may be able to suggest something little known or outside of Gettysburg that we can visit. We plan on doing some sightseeing and are definitely open to exploring a bit. We are visiting mid May 2013. Thanks in advance!!

Not knowing what you have done, it's a bit tough to list out the possibilities. Have you done everything on the "things to do" list from TA?

We really like the Segway tour of the Battlefield.

West on Rt30 is Codorus State park, south on Rt15 is Catoctin State Park for hiking etc. The 2 wineries in Gettysburg have weekend events, York Harley Davidson offers tours. Huge car shows in Carilse. Boiling Springs has a nice park area, Allenberry Playhouse is close to their, as is world reknown fly fishing. Antiquing in New Oxford, snack factory tours in Hanover. If you went in fall, then apple festival in Biglerville is great. Maybe visit Thurmont and Catoctin. Do you bike? Bike tour could be different and fun.

Have you tried the two local state parks? Both are great.

Caledonia: directly west of Gettysburg on Rt. 30. Lots of nice and easy trails.

Pine Grove Furnace: to the northwest. For a trip through time, you can try the old, old Newville Rd--travel north to Biglerville on PA 34. About 3 miles north of Biglerville, take the left fork toward Bendersville. Travel through Bendersville (which was a more bustling town at the time of the Civil War), past the mill, and then take the first right after the bridge. Keep going straight and this road will take you over the mountain to Pine Grove Furnace. We always see wildlife on the road, from raccoons to deer.

Pole Steeple is a fantastic hike. You can also see the halfway point on the Appalachian Trail, hike on the trails by Fuller Lake, or walk in the creek.

I also like the town of Boiling Springs, about 40 minutes north of Gettysburg. The Boiling Springs Tavern is a nice stop for lunch. (Note that they are closed Sundays.) You can hike part of the Appalachian Trail here as well, or just wander around the lake.

Why not try staying at a B&B. I would recommend the Doubleday. Your innkeepers will know the 'local scoop' on all those off the beaten path things that you might not have seen before.

If you are looking for "a road less traveled" on the battlefield, I can suggest the short half loop walk that begins at the William Wells monument on Confederate Avenue. This will take you to the monument to the Fifth NY cavalry and then around through the forest to the 18th PA cavalry.http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2007/10/5th-new-york-cavalry/

You might be lucky enough to see the red headed woodpeckers that hang out there.

If you haven't yet visited Catoctin Wildlife Preserve & Zoo, you might like that. It's about a half hour or less south on Route 15. http://cwpzoo.com/
