Quick weekend trip ro Jacksonville - need plan fast!

DH going to conference 2/6-7 in Jacksonville and suggested I join him and we go early for a weekend getaway! Absolutely! Of course I have to plan it and short on time right now. We are mid 40's (leaving kids at home!) love travel, outdoors, beach, fishing, diving, history, dining ...pretty easy to please. Arrive Fri evening in Jacksonville and need accomodations Fri and Sat. Will rent a car. Heard St. Augustine is really nice. Wondering if its close enuf for diving with manatees somewhere. Like nice B&B's but will stay anywhere that's clean and has ambience.

Can anyone suggest where we should stay and potential iteneraries for Fri night to Sun eve? Many thanks!

Hi Dancing Queen!

Saint Augustine is a special and delightful travel destination! Suggest you stay there Friday and Saturday nights. There are lots of B&Bs. My choice for a B&B there would be the St Francis Inn. Check out the Saint Augustine forum: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g34599-i346-Saint_…

Jacksonville is a residential town not a travel destination. We have a usual assortment of restaurants, shopping centers, museums, etc. You'll have enough time to cover Jacksonville on the days you have to be here anyway.

Enjoy your visit!

Spirit

P.S. Where is your husband's conference in Jacksonville. This is a real spread out city!

Thanks Spirit!

Having trouble with availability of B&B's in Saint Augustine that are in our price range - $150/nt max. Have found two that might work - Inn at Camachee Harbour and Castle Garden. Ever heard of either of them? We don't mind hotels just like the B&B atmosphere....move vacationish since he stays in hotels a lot with work travel.

If we have to stay in a hotel in St. Augustine is there one that you would recommend with regard to location? An Embassy Suites that looks to be about halfway between Jacksonville and St. Augustine popped up on a "specials" site through our Hilton Honors membership.

Conference is at Crowne Plaza - Jacksonville Airport Hotel....good thing I will have a car!

I love St Augustine too, but there is plenty to do in Jax for a long weekend. You can scedule a deep sea fishing trip, a kayaking tour with Kayak Jacksonville, visit our vast array of beaches from touristy Jax Beach to the secluded big and little Talbot Islands, also up that way you can do a segway tour around Kingsley Plantation. The Jax zoo is great this time of year also. As far as B&B's in Jacksoville The Riverdale and Inn on Oak Street are fabulous, and in an awesome historic area of town. Have fun in whatever you decide to do.

Hello again,

For help with Saint Augustine lodging information, I suggest you call the St. Francis Inn and talk to "OfficeMax". I don't know her real name, but that is the name she uses on the Saint Augustine TripAdvisor forum. She is the office manager for the St. Francis Inn. She is very knowledgeable and very helpful to everyone and she will aim you in the right direction even if she can't accommodate you at her B&B. (904) 824-6068 or (800) 824-6062

The beaches are delightful, however, too cool for swimming or sunbathing right now. The weather for February 4 is supposed to be cloudy with a high temp of 70, which is really comfortable!

I, too, would consider staying in St. Augustine for the weekend. It's a delightful little town and every B&B I've visited there has been fantastic. Our favorite is called the Kenwood Inn, and I'm sure that anything Spirit has suggested is fabulous.

The Riverdale Inn here in Jacksonville, also mentioned, is great. But are you looking for somewhere to stay in Jax? Or are you staying at the Crowne Plaza at the airport for the conference?

If the Embassy Suites that you mentioned is on Baymeadows Road, that's pretty much here in Jacksonville, although certainly closer to St. Augustine than the airport hotel.

While hubby is in conference, if you are staying at the airport location at that time, I would encourage you to spend a day in Fernandina/Amelia Island. It's only about 1/2 hour from the airport area, and it is a nice little town with cute boutiques, antique stores, and fun little restaurants. It's a very easy drive. You would want to do a Mapquest or Google map from your hotel to Center Street in Fernandina; that's where you'll find most of the fun shops. It would be a fun afternoon on your own.

Let us know if we can be of further help! Enjoy your little vacay!

We are staying at the Crowne Plaza during the conference but on our own Fri and Sat nights. He does like zoos and I had heard that JAX zoo is great so that is on our to-do list. I have seen info on Amelia Island and even thought about maybe going that way rather than St. Augustine for Fri/Sat but think we'll stick with the original plan and I will do Amelia Island by myself. I will check out the Riverdale Inn. Also found two with availability in St. Augustine that are in our price range and seem to get pretty good reviews.

Other activities I've thought about and we've done in other towns with great success - food tour and drink tours. Saw there are good ones recommended in St. Augustine. Anybody have experience with either? One type of tour we've never tried is an Eco Tour but it is highly rated on TA for the JAX/St. Aug "tour" list.

Although I would enjoy just being away with no agenda....I sure am thankful for TA and the folks who are area specialists there. One is able to make so much more of a trip with the great input and comments here and in short order. Thanks very much!!

I think your plan is good to do a day trip to Fernandina and actually stay in St. Augustine. The Riverdale Inn is in Jacksonville, so it doesn't really look as though that will fit in with your plans since you're staying at the Crowne Plaza and St. Augustine. It would be a great option if you needed somewhere to stay in Jacksonville. You may want to do the zoo on the day you get in, because it's close to the airport. That way you're not driving all the way back from St. Augustine (or alternatively, do the zoo on the day you drive back to that area to the Crowne Plaza).

I am not familiar with the Eco tours...can't really recommend, but that may be great.

Let us know if you need restaurant recommendations...

Just an additional thought here...Ponte Vedra Inn and Club is offering a weekend getaway through 2/4. You can only book by phone, but they are offering rates starting at $209 for Friday night and Saturday night is FREE. $104 per night (plus tax and fees) for a 5* resort, so that is a nice deal. You'd be in close proximity to St. Aug as well.
