Option A (cool; independent; no-chains; true Jax): I assume you have a car. Take 95th North and get off at the Park Street exit (first one after you go over bridge, downtown Jax will be on your right hand side). Check out 5 Points (independent shops; quirky part of town). See Memorial Park, maybe have a picnic with food from Black Sheep. Check out the RAM (Riverside Arts Market): lots of local pastries, foods, veggies, fruits, street performers, etc. Right under 95, can't miss it. Good fun. Right next door you'll see the Cummer Museum, with is also a great stop if you're in the mood for a museum. Great gardens in the back, too.

Head over to Stockton Street & check out one of the most happening blocks in town. Get a coffee and a pastry from Bold Bean Coffee Roasters (some of the best hand roasted coffee in the country, bar none). Maybe grab an arepa from Tres Leches, or have some tapas from 13 Gypsies. Hop on St. John's Avenue and check out History Avondale, and walk the oak lined streets & take a look at the historic homes. Downtown Avondale is the upscale/old-money section of Jacksonville. You'll find an organic gourmet food store, a wine shop, a chocolate shoppe (Peterbrooke, a local icon), and some dessert from Let Them Eat Cake. There's also a great Middle Eastern restaurant there called Casbah.

Then, take your car another mile or so to Chamblin's Bookmine. 2.5 million used and new books in stock (the average Barnes and Noble has 20,000). Chamblin's is like Powell's in Portland or The Strand in NYC...awesome stop. If you have time, either before or after, walk the Riverwalk. Miles of walking right on the river.

Option B (lots of chains; shopping; people; stuff): St. John's Town Center. It's close to your hotel. Make no mistake about it, it's an outdoor mall. That being said, there's some pretty good food there (some local, some chain), and you'll see your high end stores here: Louis Vuitton, Apple, lululemon, etc. Lots of people like it, but if malls aren't your thing, go with Option A.

Also, there's always the beach, but with 1/2 a day, it doesn't seem like a good use of time.

I obviously prefer option A, but to each his/her own.

Hi cj,

-If you go into town like Ben suggested, go to The Landing across the river. It's the place with the big orange roof. Have a drink there or take a walk and enjoy the views. Day or night.

-You sound like you would like Jacksonville Beach. It's lively on the weekend!

-If you have at least a spare morning or afternoon, go down to Saint Augustine and take the trolley tour. If that is all yo have time for there, at least you will know you have to come back.

What eco tours are you referring to? Are you arriving via car? Where from? Airport? What kind of experience are you looking for...

Will be driving from south Carolina, wanted to experience a tour, that was informative, able to see dolphins. Maybe experience the lite house, that morning, through afternoon, and maybe spend rest of time in jacks.any live performances, this coming weekend?

Hello again cj,

Check in with the Saint Augustine forum. They know all about eco tours and such down there.

Here's the web site: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g34599-i346-Saint_…

Sorry I haven't weighed in here. I'm not really sure about good answers for you. I don't actually know of any eco tours. With so little time, you'll probably want to either choose to spend it in Jacksonville or St. Augustine but I don't think you really have time for both. Are you on your way somewhere else and passing through for the weekend? That may affect how we tell you to spend your time - for example, if you're headed south, then St. Augustine should be visited on your way that direction...
