Afternoon in Baltimore

My husband and I will be in Baltimore at the end of June. We will only be there for an evening, as we leave the next day to drive to Lancaster, PA. What should we try to squeeze in while we're there? The actual time will be 12:30 on a Thursday through the next morning. THANKS!

Maybe something that Baltimore is famous for? Good eats? We're up for pretty much any ideas right now.

Maryland is known for seafood...crabs in particular. There are a few places down there that I'd say mignt be good called McCormicks and Schmics, Phillips, and Bo Brooks come to mind.

One of the places that you might want to think about is Fort McHenry which is where the anthem was written

What's to do at the Harbor? How far is that from BWI?

There is a water taxi, shops and restaurants. Also some ships you can board like the constellation. Or you could visit the National Aquarium. As indicated Fort McHenry is great visit. The IH is about 15 minutes from BWI without traffic.

One possible combo:

Visionary Arts museum

Ft McHenry

then Cross Street Market in Federal Hill for eats on the way back

Capt Larry's is good local color spot with fabulous burgers and fries on the eastern edge of Federal Hill as an alternative

or LP steamers for crabs, also just east of Federal Hill

There are several great things around the harbor as well as outside! Like- Fells Point, Federal Hill, etc. Segs in the City offers tours that cover several places. The response about the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) was a great suggestion. Good luck and enjoy your time in Baltimore, plenty to offer.

You can have a great day just walking around Inner Harbor. Plenty of shops, resaurants and museums in that area. I would focus in that area since your time line is just a day. Here is a link to Baltimore Inner Harbor

after a quick trip to the inner harbor area (unless you are interested in going to the national aquarium i would say no more than an hour is needed to see it all), i would recommend a visit to the mount vernon neighborhood, just north of downtown. it is about a 20 minute walk or just hop on the free charm city circulator (purple route) and get off at the washington monument. this area is very historic and charming, with great architecture. plus, there should be less tourists and better food options.

even if you just need respite from the heat, check out the walters museum, which is also in mount vernon. it is free and one of my favorite museums: http://thewalters.org/

finally, if the orioles are in town i would recommend a visit to the ball park. you'll have no problems getting tickets and it should be an enjoyable (and rather economical) way to end your brief stay.
