Wow, been a while since I've driven that route - I used to do it all the time when I was in college up in NYC. Can't believe how expensive it is now. Makes it worth it to take the train, especially when you factor in gas and traffic on 95 and the turnpike!!

Amtrak is probably doing fine in the NE corridor, but they could lower fares by $10 each way and really open themselves up to a much larger segment of the population. As it is now, if you've got 2 people traveling to NYC, driving is cheaper than the train -- by quite a lot too.

That figure also sounds right to me. It's also one of the reasons why I haven't been to NY in over a decade.

Strictly speaking, using the conventional NJTP-I-95 routing for a 2-axle vehicle, the one-way toll from midtown NYC to Baltimore would be anywhere from $17.35 to $24.55..."depending on..."

*Southbound* NYC to Baltimore

**************************************

NJTP, Lincoln Tunnel to Delaware Memorial Bridge: $12.55 peak, $9.35 off-peak (Holland Tunnel and GWB slightly more)

Delaware Memorial Bridge: $4

Delaware I-95: $4

McHenry or Harbor Tunnel (if needed): $4

Return trip northbound would be anywhere from $29.55 to $39.55:

*Northbound* Baltimore to NYC

*************************************

McHenry or Harbor Tunnel (if needed): $4

JFK Highway (Md): $7.20 (EZPass Maryland) or $8 (other states)

Delaware I-95: $4

NJTP to Lincoln Tunnel: $12.55 peak, $9.35 off-peak

Lincoln Tunnel: $11 peak, $9 off-peak

I suspect you're talking about a round trip--which would be no less than $46.90 and no more than $64.10 "depending..."

If you were charged $70, I suspect that has to do with replenishment to your account in excess of the tolls that were actually incurred.

With creative routing via Pennsylvania and the right timing, the southbound trip can be made for $2.60 and the northbound trip for just $10.60 ($13.20 roundtrip).

The tolls are expensive. I got 5 Megabus tickets for $42 round trip for November 1. I bought the tickets last month.
