Is a car necessary in Savannah?

We will be flying into Savannah for 3 days and are staying down on Bay Street. Besides getting to and from the airport, is it necessary to have a car? Are there cabs/public transportation or should we rent a car? Your thoughts would be helpful. Thanks! I love Trip Advisor and never go anywhere without checking it out first.

There really isn't a need for a car-- most of what you want to see is in the HD anyway.

There are cabs, but don't count on flagging one down. If you want a cab you'd better call their dispach. Get the number from the hotel front desk before you venture out, or have the bar/restaurant call for you-- most will without any problem.

Or try a Pedicab, which is a pedal taxi.

I agree, don't get a car. Cab to the airport is $30 or so and the Historic District is only a mile square so you are never far from anything.

Also keep in mind the CAT shuttle, a free shuttle that loops around the HD
