A local told us the breakfast at B.Matthews was very good, but we did not get to try it. It is on Bay Street. Check the reviews on TA. :)

B. Matthews is an excellent choice. Also, a few blocks south is J. Christophers.

There's also Clary's, we had breakfast there last Summer and it was reasonable and we got a lot of food! And, don't forget this was the diner in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Clary's used to be a locals' favorite, but the past couple of times I've gone there I've been disappointed in the service and food quality. Last time I went there for breakfast my food was served on a plate which had dried food stuck to it. The utensils were also spotted. Unappetizing! Sorry, but I can't recommend Clary's. It's dirty.

No restaurant in downtown Savannah is "inexpensive" like a fast-food joint. You'll pay moderate to high prices. Express Cafe on Barnard St. just south of the huge construction area, is great for breakfast....I think they're closed Mondays.

Belford's at City Market has a fabulous breakfast, ditto J. Christopher's on Liberty & Abercorn, close to the Cathedral. Those 3 are not overly expensive, but you'll average $10-12 per person, with coffee.

We ate the breakfast buffet at Belford's, ate outside. It was enjoyable, but if you are walking B. Matthews will be closer. The buffet at Belford's was set up on a counter, food in warmers. They had bacon, sausage, fried potatos, gravy, scrambled eggs, french toast sticks, etc. It was pretty good. You could also order from the menu. Atmosphere outside at Belford's looking onto City Market was nice.

Clary's downtown location is positively foul. Dirty coffee cups and utensils & greasy, ill-prepared food.

You'd do much better with J. Christophers, B. Matthews, Express Cafe, or even coffee & muffins from Gallery Espresso. All these are great choices.

I haven't tried Belford's for breakfast yet... is it better than their dinner menu? I haven't been back since I got a thimble-sized unappetizing crab cake & was charged 11.95.
