Camping near Savannah?

My wife and I are looking at doing a road trip from Nova Scotia Canada to the southern states this fall / early winter. We are driving a small RV and looking for nice places to stop for a few days to a week in the Savannah area. Are there any nice, quiet, safe places to camp close to the city? We are also into walking, hiking, kayaking, good food, architecture and history. Any suggestions on all these topics close to Savannah much appreciated.

It will depend on what you think is "near" the city. There are two that I can think of right now.....there may be more....

One is at Tybee Island and the other is on Skidaway Island. The one on Skidaway will probably be the nearest to the Historic District. About a 15 0r 20 minute drive. The one at Tybee, about 10 minutes more.

Will you have a car to drive too? Parking for RVs in the Historic District is restricted.

Tybee would be a great place to stay since there is a lot of kayaking that goes on around the island, rivers behind the island and the ocean to the east alllow lots of opportunity for paddling.

The rv park campground out there is owned by the city and nice but expensive.

There is also an rv park in Hardeeville SC, right across the river and actually a shorter drive from the Historic District than Tybee or Skidaway. It is not fancy but has hookups etc.

History wise just walk the HD. Signs, markers and statues are everywhere. The city was established in 1733 so lots of history.

I am going to Savannah in June and we are staying at Ft McAlester, not to far from Savannah. You might check that one out. Haven't been there. This is my first time in the area.

If you're looking for kayaking then you'll want to stay out near Tybee Island. This is the campground that you'll want to look into to:

Of the 3 campgrounds referred to above they are all nice and have their good points. Fort Mac. in Richmond hill is the fartherest from downtown Savannah. It is about 45 minutes to an hour drive. For kayaking this campground/ state park has 2 boat ramps. The punblic ramp is on the Ogeechee river near the sound. The campgound ramp is inside the campground and on a smaller creek. The Ogeechee river is a major water shed for much of the state of Georgia. The current here can be bad. The other ramp is better.

The Skidaway Island state park is set back in the woods. it too is very nice. From this campground you are 5 minutes to a nice public boat ramp. There are miles of march creeks to explore here. Also this campground is the closest to the downtown area and it is an easy drive.

The third campground is on tybee. It is a small campground in a quite area of the island. There are several places to put a kayak in the water near this campground. Also there are a couple of kayak shops within a couple of miles of it. Do a search for Sea Kayak Georgia and North Island kayak. This campground is about 5 to 10 minutes farther from downtown than Skidaway. It to is a very easy drive.

I would look into either the Tybee Island campground or Skidaway Island campground. Just remember to bring plenty of bug spray.

John
