Should we rent a car?

We plan to visit Savannah and stay at the Avia for a few nights in May. For the most part we plan to do our sightseeing in the historic district/ river street area, but we would like to spend at least part of a day on Tybee Island.

My question is- would it be better to rent a car for that purpose or take a cab? What is parking like if we rented a car? Or if we took a cab, about how much would it cost and is it easy to get a cab back to the historic district once we're out there?

Thanks so much for your help!

For just hanging out in the historic district a car isn't needed or even desireable. But it does come in handy for going to places like Tybee or

Bonaventure. There is a shuttle you can catch to Tybee but then you wouldn't be able to stop at Ft Pulaski. Bottom line is that if it's your first time in Savannah they a car would help. What you can do is just rent one for a day and hit the places you'd want a car for in one day, very doable.

I agree, have them bring you a car at your hotel and come get it next morning. You only want it the day you go to the beach,
