2 nights - First timers - what hotel/area is the best for us

We like nice accommodations (4 or 5 star). Want to be near shops/restaurants - easily walkable. Looked at the Olde Harbour Inn - but am thinking it might be too far from the historic district. Also considered Mansion on Forsyth Park. We want something nice so that our trip will be memorable.

Would like to book soon as we want to go mid-May.

Also, any restaurant suggestions. We do not want to go to Paula Deens, but anything else?

Thanks everyone for the help.

The entire historic district is about 1 1/2 miles long by a little over 1 mile wide. The Olde Harbour Inn is centrally located at the far northern end, next to the River and River Street. The Mansion at Forsyth is centrally located at the far southern end. Both are actually IN the historic district.

Given the choice, if you want to shop, go to restaurants, etc. the Old Harbour Inn is the better of the two.

I prefer the Mansion but it is a pretty good ways from Bay Street. I also like Planters Inn and Bohemian which are both highly ranked properties. Pink House Restaurant is next door to Planaters. Go to Noble Fare or Local 11 Ten for fine dining. Go to Savannah City Market near Bay Street for fun dining and shopping. Good luck.

So exactly where are the shops/restaurants that you can stroll to located - River Street? Bay Street?

We'd probably enjoy not using our car once we arrive.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The shops and restaurants are basically all over the place but yes, along River Street there are a ton of touristy shops and restaurants. Go up one street and again, tons of better restaurants along Bay Street, some stores. Go up one more street (parallel to the river and towards Forsyth Park) and you hit Broughton Street which is the traditional downtown street with more restaurants and stores. At the far end of Broughton is the area called the City Square which has many shops and restaurants but like River St is very, very touristy. Then as you head further towards the Park, there are small clumps of cafes and small shops around many of the squares. You will NOT be able to miss them all, don't worry!

Karrieb

Thanks for the info. What hotels would you suggest looking at to put us in the heart of things? Trying to book today.

Planters Inn or The Bohemian would be right in the middle of where you will like to visit. Good luck.

The Hilton Garden Inn Historic District would be perfect as well as The Bohemian.

We actually just decided to book the Olde Harbour Inn - location looked good and there are 4 of us and we could get a 2-bedroom accommodation there. Hopefully we made the right choice.

Now need some nearby restaurant names.

The Bohemian, The Avia, The Hyatt, all very central and nice, the hyatt obviously part of a large chain, the other two smaller chains I think "boutique" hotel is the new buzz word.

There is also a doubletree, a Hilton Garden a Hilton express and a Hampton inn all within a few blocks.

Personally, I would stay at the Bohemian or the Avia, as high as you can get for a quiet, memorable stay right in the middle of things.

I was typing all that when you were posting that the decision was made.

i think you will be happy at the Olde Harbour, it is right across the street from the river. it is an older place but well cared for and well run.

Nearby is a place we love to eat when the weather is nice One eyed Lizzies. Nothing fancy just tex mex but they have these nice little one table balconies that stick out over river street, We sit there for hours sipping Margaritas and watching the world go by.

You may have to wait for a balcony but it is a separate list and usually not too long. It is really cool if a ship happens to go by while you are there!
