Marriott Residence Inn - Downtown/Historic District

Thoughts? Seems new and has good reviews. We love that there is a pool there. We dont mind walking a bit to things as long as its less than 10 blocks or so. Also, the rates are decent. We would like to stay under $200/night.

The Marriott Residence Inn is in a place with both pros and cons. It is right next the Railroad Roundhouse Musem http://railga.com/oddend/roundhouse.html

and the Savannah Visitors Center, where you can catch many tours.

It is in walking distance to several good restaurants (Crystal Beer Parlor, the Distillery, Rancho Allegro), and about a four block walk from the City Market Area. it is also a fairly new hotel, only a year or so old. All of those count as pros.

The Con is it sits in an area not far from the on-ramp to Interstate 16, which means that about 50% of the neighborhood is sketchy. The area does not have the aesthetic beauty that can be found a couple of blocks away.

I agree. Check out the Hampton Inn in the historic district. It is close to restaurants and the riverfront.

Inn at Ellis square has a pool as well, much more central. The residence would be a cool place though if you are "city aware" it is a little off the beaten path.

Several hotels on Bay Street usually run under $200 a night and would be more central to the historic district and in a better neighborhood in my opinion. I'm not sure when you're going but Mansion on Forsyth Park has a special rate through Travelzoo at $129 a night. It is further from the river but it's a nice hotel and a great buy at $129 a night.

I second Mansion on Forsyth Park. They have a nice spa and a great restaurant. It is a pretty good walk to Bay Street though. Mulberry Inn and Planters Inn are good choices near Bay Street. The Pink House is next door to Planters and serves outstanding lunch or dinner.
