Is Paula Deen's "The Lady and Sons" Really Worth Visiting?

We'll be traveling to Savannah in a few weeks and several recent reviews of Paula Deen's "The Lady and Sons" have seemed really mixed...What do you think of the Restaurant? We also heard that the "Tour" is really expensive..?

I hate saying, It Depends, but that's about it. If you are completly unfamiliar with the southern style of cooking, then you will like the food. It's really not great. Just the usual, lots of butter, cooked with bacon or ham, and simmered a long time, style.

So many visitors think it's great. especially if they are used to getting meals out of the frozen-ready cooked section of the super market. However, most of us feel that paying to eat something that isn't as good as what you had for supper last night at home, isn't worth the wait.

BUT, there's something to be said for actually eating there. There's no doubt that the Lady has done a great job of getting a business started from nothing.

I'd skip her tour. Try for one of the others that feature Savannah instead of Paula. I'm sorry that I can't tell you which is best.

I second the above. I think you would enjoy B Matthews as well as Belford's. And you won't stand in line. Good luck.

B. Matthews Eatery @ 325 East Bay St., Savannah, GA. 912 - 233 - 1319.

Belford's Restaurant Seafood and Steaks @ 315 W Street Julian St., Savannah, GA. 912 - 233 - 2626.

One of my favorite pieces of advice when looking for a restaurant in a travel destination is to :

1. Research several review sites, paying attention to the most recent reviews.

2. As I pull in the parking lot (doesnt really apply to Lady & Sons) I count the number of local license plates on cars versus out of state plates. If there are few or no local plates, or few cars from any state, I scratch it from my list and move on. The worst restaurants usually have the best coupon deals to lure in people from out of state who do not know better.

I can't say it better than those who responded previously, if you want good southern food, this isnt it. But if you love the Lady and would be inspired by visiting a place that belongs to her, so be it. I feel the same way about Graceland or Dollywood, both are cheesy and overpriced, but if you are a fan, you would probably enjoy the experience at any price.

We used to eat at L & S when she was at a smaller place. She was there tending to things and it was good food. We went to her "new" place once, and that was the last time. It was such a let down. It now has a ware house feeling, with fair to just bad food. It's really a shame. As stated before, for great food in a lovely building that hasn't changed in the 32 years we've been going there, go to Mrs. Wilkes on Jones Street. Locals and tourists alike go there for a wonderful meal. You'll wait in line (probably) at both places, may as well have good food waiting for you at the end of the wait, at Mrs. Wilkes. Plus, it's quaint and not as noisy there. Cash only.

My advise is go but don't expect it to the be the best food you've ever eaten. If you like Paula and want to experience The Lady and Sons, then I thinnk you should do it. Life is too short because no matter how bad it is to someone else, you'll still always wish you would have eaten there.

No kick back Jackie, just giving an honest answer/opinon from my experience. My husband is from Savannah, we have family there, and none of them will go to L&S since she moved to her new location. Gave it one try and won't go back. All go to Mrs. Wilkes. SueQ asked a question and she was given answers. Only one person was making accusations, Jackie.

I do hope you will have a nice visit to Savannah SueQ.
