One night stay in Savannah while passing through. Suggestion for reasonable hotel ($100-125) that we can still reach historic area with shuttle or 5 mile drive. Hampton or Drury Inn type. (Hampton not avail. for Mon. date)

Try to get a room in the historic district.

If you can't, the other areas are Midtown, Gateway and airport area.

Midtown would be within 5 miles but is stop and go traffic. I prefer staying near the airport because it's a quick drive via the expressway.

We stayed here and really liked it -

Mid town would be 2nd best area, under 5 miles, hotel may have free shuttle to HD. Easy & quick to get to HD. Check La Quinta, Hampton Inn midtown, etc.

go to priceline, bid 4 star and above in HD, you will get the westin, usually for under $90/night in peak -- has boat shuttle across the river to HD. Note the pool is only 3 foot deep.

If you can get any hotel for under $100 in the HD ( exception would be the Thunderbird Inn ) it would be worth it.

Because it is the only 4star hotel offered in the HD --- make sure you choose "savannah" and not "savannah - all areas".

Not true. The Andaz is 4star on Priceline and the Manson on Forsyth Park is 4.5.

The Westin may come up as wins more often because they have so many more rooms and it's across the river, but if you are really lucky you may win the Andaz.

The 3.5 star hotels are all winners (IMO) - the Hilton DeSoto, the Hyatt on the river, the Marriott Riverfront (not my favorite) and the Planter's Inn. All would be great deals for less than $100.

Remember to bid for a Priceline room ONLY if there are 2 or fewer people to the room. That's all Priceline honors. If you need 2 beds or there's 3-4 people in your party, use Hotwire. If there's 2 of you but each want their own beds, bid on Hotwire but list 3 guests on your bid.

I got the Hilton Desoto last time and was very pleased with it - $99 on Hotwire.
