I am planning a trip to the Fairbanks area for next March, 2012 with main goal of seeing the Aurora plus other activities such as hot springs, skiing, and ice sculpture. My target dates are March 17 to 27, or therabouts. All input welcome on things to be sure not to miss during that time!
I am trying to reach Aurora Borealis Lodge, run by Mok, because they have super reviews, but no reply to email or phone message left. I would love to spend the soltice nights there. Are they still in business? Is it just too soon to book for next year, so they aren't taking me seriously and replying? Are they close to SkiLand? Will I have to rent a car for these locations, or are there shuttles?
I am considering Chena Hot Springs for a 3 night package, with airport shuttle and various activities like snow coach, mineral soak time, plus some meals included. Am I going to have to rent a car anyway, so booking the package with shuttle is moot/waste?
Also looking at Mt Aurora Fairbanks Creek Lodge for 2 or 3 nights, especially if cannot reach Mok, because want some nights at Cleary Summit for viewing lights. Also like to ski.
Where is best location to stay in Fairbanks for a couple nights at start/end of trip to see ice sculptures?
Whats it like to drive in Fairbanks and Cleary Summit, Chena Hot Springs Road in the winter, will I be able to drive safely? (I know snow driving, but not AK temperatures and roads.)
