Best place and time to observe the Northern Lights in USA?

We will travel in January to the USA and my husband would love to see the Northern Lights in Alaska or somewhere else far north. 2012 is supposed to be a great year for that, so hopefully there are some specialists out there that are in the know. Thanks!!

Where will you be in the USA and how long? The best place for Alaska to see the lights is the Interior because we tend to have the clear weather - also some of the coldest. There is a side bar to the right - has info on seeing the aurora . . .and any winter travel in Alaksa is easier on the budget when compared to summer prices! :)

"2012 is supposed to be a great year for that,"

Well, not really. We're still coming out of a long solar minimum...and the peak of the cycle is predicted between 2013-2014. Unfortunately, it is not expected to be anywhere near as good as the last peak in 2001. More info here: http://aurorahunter.com/aurora-prediction.php

That doesn't mean, however, that you won't get to see them, or won't get to see a nice display. Fairbanks is a good place to go if you want to stay in the USA, if you can spend at least 3 or 4 nights there. It will be awfully cold, though, so be prepared.

We had lots of nights with good lights this year. Here, outside of Fairbanks is one of the best places to see them. Of course, that time of year is also some of the coldest. But there are warm locations inside that you can watch for them out the window and run out side to photograph them when they come out.

Mmmmm I have to wonder if you're coming to the USA, would you really consider a special trip up to AK to see the aurora? You can expect a very expensive airline ticket if that is your plan. If your existing plans to the USA do not already include Alaska, I would advise against trying to tie it in on this particular trip.

Of course, if time and money are of no issue . . . hopefully you'll pick a good date and be fortunate enough to see them.
