our first Alaskan holiday vacation trip

We are planning to catch a train from Anchorage to Fairbanks for a few days after Christmas Day and then back to Anchorage for our flight home. Could someone recommend lodging and things to do ideas? Also, what train ride would be best to get up there. We have 7 days to do what we want. Thanks

No choice in train, there's only one. More importantly; are you aware the train goes to Fairbanksonly on Saturdays and returns on Sundays?

We took the train to Fairbanks one Saturday (February) and flew back to Sacramento from there. The train is very basic with only a coach and baggage car. No food services, although a crew member may or may not have snacks available, (this is not a part of the service). Your trip will be dark at the beginning and the end.

Here's the link for the schedule for the winter train:

alaskarailroad.com/travel/…Default.aspx

There's a tab for "Winter". As mentioned, the train leaves Anchorage at 8:30am on Saturday and arrives in Fairbanks at 8pm. At the bottom it says dining service is available, but I'd call and double check.

Your request for lodging and activities suggestions: was that for your time in Anchorage or your time Fairbanks? Or both?

What are the ages of the people in your group? Are you renting a car in Anchorage or Fairbanks? What are your interest?

I'm hoping you've done enough research to see that visiting Alaska in the winter is a much different experience than visiting in the summer, and I don't just mean the weather.

We traveled january last year, decided not to take the train, as it would be a whole day out of our trip. Flight to Fairbanks only takes one hour. We had seven days and saw the northern light 6 out of the 7 nights. We flew up to Bettles lodge for 3 nights, fantastic place, great flight and great food. Enjoy your holiday.

What are your interests and why are you thinking about going to Fairbanks? Unless you have family there and that's the reason, I would suggest skipping it and enjoy your time in and around Anchorage.

We have done the winter (Aurora) train ride at least three different Februarys. It is nothing like the summer train trips. Highly recommend it. When the last time we took it (prior to our 2009 move) had only a coach and baggage car. According to my 2009 sked they have a dining car?
